SPORE

SPORE

...from the mind of Will Wright.

Out of curiosity, has anyone else out there been waiting years for this title to release? If so... fear not, for September 7th 2008 is upon us. Finally. But, all we can do is hold our breath. Those who know, this game's release date has been pushed back year after year. Month after month. However this time, we have a specific day. Not just a quarterly prediction, or a general month.. a month, day, and a year.

http://www.spore.com

The best way to describe SPORE is to call it a "evolution simulation". You start off with a microscopic organism.. and you simply eat other smaller ones. And once you've earned enough points, you can evolve your creature via the "creature creator". Now.. how you evolve it is totally up to you. Defense? Offense? It's all very basic... or so we thought.

Eventually, your organism becomes a full fledged creature. Your creature emerges from the tidal pool, and sets foot/feet/paws/flippers/whatever-you-want on land. Boom, Hello World! But becareful... other creatures have evolved too. Some may have evolved into herbevorous dwellers.. or multi-toothed vicious carnivores. In any case... life must go on.

This leads you to the Tribal Phase, Civilization Phase (i.e, take over your planet), and furthermore... the Space Phase.

The following are direct quotes from Spore.com commenting on each phase of the game.

Tide Pool Phase
Fight with other creatures and consume them to adjust the form and abilities of your creature. It's survival of the fittest at the most microscopic level.

Creature Phase
Venture onto land and help your creature learn and evolve with forays away from your nest. The only way to grow is by taking chances!

Tribal Phase
Instead of controlling an individual creature, you are now caring for an entire tribe. Give them tools and guide their interactions as you upgrade their state of existence.

Civilization Phase
Once your city is established, your creatures begin seeking out and interacting with other cultures. Make contact with an olive branch or a war cry. The goal for your creatures is to conquer the planet.

Space Phase
The time has come to move on to other worlds in your solar system. Make contact, colonize, or terraform, then venture further to find other solar systems. A 'mission' structure provides new goals in your quest for galactic dominance.

Sound neat right? It is. Imagine the GC2 Ship Builder... but for creatures. And for ships. And buildings. And cities. Yes, that's right. Not only can you totally customize your creature...but you can customize their building style, vehicle style, etc. Awesome.

But.. how crazy can you get with the creature editor? I'll show you.

The following are different fan concepts submitted to the SPORE team. They put the crew to the test, just to see if the editor can actually give you as much control as you want. So let's take a look...

Fan Submitted Graphic

Creature created in the SPORE Creature Creator

Wow.

Fan Submitted Graphic (looks like maybe an attempted 3D render)

Creature Creator

Amazing... And.. just to be real crazy...

I'm sure this fan thought he stumped them...

And he was wrong.

(There are more at the official website for everything SPORE, http://www.spore.com )

But.... that's not all. The game not only lets you builder whatever you want, but it recognizes the creatures structure, and it customized how the character would move. Bipedal? Walks. Lots of little feet...they all work together, like a centipede.

It also recognized the offensive/defensive abilities of your creature. It will use what is on it's body to attack. For instance, if you have a claw hanging off of the top of your creatures head, it uses that to attack.

This has been displayed numerous times in videos of SPORE, whichare all displayed on the SPORE website.

Here is a quick glimpse of the creature creator...

Are your creative juices pumping out yet? Already itching to try your hand at this?

Well... coming on June 17th, 2008 you can download a 25% enabled demo of the creature creator, or..for $10 (yes, EA are a bunch of moneygrubbing ..ehrm.. yeah. ) you can purchase the full Creature Creator. It lets you do everything fully to create your creature, and offers you a small little area to see your creature in action. And of course, these are importable to the retail version coming in September.

Now... on one final note. They have categorized Spore as a Multi-Single Player experience. Or some kind of catch phrase like that. What this means that, if you have an internet connection, your game will actually pull down other peoples creatures and use them in YOUR game to populate the planets in your game. This is done via the Sporepedia. Basically, all of your creatures are uploaded to it, and will populate other people's games. And vice versa. This ensures you will never run into the same creatures over and over again. There will always be something new.

Anyhow... this is my little spill about the game. It's gonna be good. There are tons of screenshots, team created creatures, and videos all at the official website at http://www.spore.com

If getting new activations was proven to be easy, I'd have gone with it. You can always crack it later if they shut down the servers in the future. Unfortunately they're making people wait weeks in Mass Effect, so buying is a big why bother.

The problem with that, psychoak (and I've said this on the BioWare boards as well) is if you buy the game, you're basically telling EA or any other publisher that this DRM scheme is A-OK with you. Of course, people are free to do as they wish, but I was bitten by BioShock's DRM and any publisher that uses a DRM like that can kiss my ass before I'll hand them any money for it again.

who is going to be putting it on 3 computors anyway. its not like this game is going to be uncommon. what is the problem with a 3 comp limit?

My laptop, my desktop, my kids computer. BOOM! 3 activations used, on release day. There is no law that stops me installing it on as many machines as I want (my wife's machine would be four). There is no reason to limit this, particular when the game is so utterly reliant upon online content.

I still really want to buy Spore, but I am waiting to see which option is the best one to go for. (Disk, download etc...) I am hoping, to be honest, that it gets cracked, and very quickly, so I don't have to deal with the activation nonsense.

Oh yeah, and whining about Steam is pathetic. I've used it for years and had not one single issue. Neither has anyone else I know. I'm sure there ARE some issues, but as a service, Steam is awesome. It just works. I'd rather use Steam than the atrocity that is Impulse.

I thought Black and White was overhyped, overrated, and pretty boring. I'm indifferent to Spore. It sounds somewhat interesting and it's definitely getting lots of hype, and I'm sure it'll get great reviews, but I'll be looking for objective feedback on it before I bother trying it (since a lot of the so-called review entities are more about promoting, hyping, and advertising than actually reviewing).

i wanted spore to be a game where every person has there own planet to start on then when all planets are taken new players start on that planets with the fewest number of people on it and if the other players kill them they have to start a new creature making it an actual fight for survival and the need for faster evolution, and would also work in terms of political game cause u can make alliances and when u log off the game u can set the auto ai to simply defend ur nation and tell ur allie friends ur not online instead of them asking for something then u ignoring them then they get mad and attack u then log on to find out all this happened it just looked more amazing when i thought it was actually like this.

I wanted to toss my hat into this now that I've had an experience with EA.

Once the tech specs were announced for the game, I noticed that the Geforce 5200 wasn't on the list. It had that 128MB of ram and the pixel shader 2.0, so what else about it was causing it to not make the cut?

I sent in a support question and the first response was to post a Q on the spore forums so a dev could answer it. Well, from what I'm seeing, you need to buy spore to get a login to their forums. After telling them that, I got a response "well, we didn't test it, it's not on the list, we can't say if it'll work".

Yup, that's it. ~click~

I guess I've just been spoiled by Stardock with customer support that when I tried to deal with EA I got turned away as an unpaying number. They didn't even try to give me an answer so that I may just buy their game.

Will Wright has stated that a fully online version of Spore might become a reality in the future.

uhhh? is this forum dead??

This thread is quiet, and these days there isn't really a "this forum" for any Stardock-related site.

The petition is a nice idea, but it might get more signers if it was a bit more detailed and was in decent formal English. I've signed many petitions in my life, but I've also skipped many like that one because I feel like signing a petition means "I say this too," and that's hard when you're not entirely sure what the petition is saying and what you can make out is not being said very well.

Ten thousand curses on EA and SecuROM. I would *so* be playing too much Spore now if it weren't for them.

Sheesh, even the NYTimes can tell Spore's a cool game. Too bad they don't have sense to include discussion of how *not* cool SecuROM is. Man, I want to play that game.

Already cracked, from what I've read on another site. Guess the DRM isn't really doing much to prevent piracy is it?

But it surely as hell prevented me from buying it.

Hey, it's working (in a way :D ) then.

so, the drm in spere has aleready been crecked, how long do ya think until a tutorial or download becomes available to crack it?

Doesn't it use exactly the same DRM as Mass Effect? If they didn't change it much, then days, if not hours.

If they changed it a lot, then weeks, if not days.

I'm going to wait for reviews (And paycheck...) before I decide whether to buy or not.

Well, the germans didn't like it (79% and 73%) but that doesn't necessary mean much.

I cancled my pre-order, its not worth 50 bucks imho, when it hits 19.99 I'll but a copy.

All the reviews I've seen just seem to depress me, the game has been so over-hyped for 2-3 years that its just not living up to what I want.

Plus I read on the EA forums that you can build a glactic empire of many many colonies , but only control 1 space ship , WTF?!?!!!!

All the reviews basically say it's a bunch of overly simplistic "mini-games" mashed together. :P They just say it nicer.

Makes me sad.....

Been getting information from someone playing a pirate version.

Simple applies to only the first four stages.  He's bitching about how ridiculously complex and difficult to manage the space phase is.  I guess he's really getting the shit kicked out of him after walking through the other stages on easy.

I haven't cared one bit. Haven't even been on the site.

well, that finalizes it, im not getting it until they fix it.

Glad its finally coming out. I have been following this game for years!!

The concept is awesome and the game will still be great even in its current release; however ---

- I wish they would have kept the game in a more realistic/normal look, when they released the cute cuddly cartoon version of the models and graphics it scored some serious negative points with me. I was close to canceling my preorder but the premise behind the game is awesome so I stuck it out.

- I havent played the game yet (except my preorder gave me the creature editor) but I know that the games strategic depth and planet sizes (I know two different issues) are small. Now that the game has been reviewed it is a fact that the game is awesome fun but leaves any strategy game fan wanting more on the strategy side and my own opinion on the planets is that they are tiny. There is a certain exploration of the unknown that really appeals to me and I think that with the current size of the planets thats going to be a real negative for me. From what I could see the current size of the planets would only be good enough to serve as one region/continent (I know relative) to explore. I also read-and saw a video that states the planets can be tweaked in a planet editor size and many other options and it is all based on your PC's power/capabilities so we will see.

- Also there are some really cool points/features that are present in Spore that Stardock should look into implementing into there own franchise as far as powerful editors to make user made content, although Stardock presently has an editor, Stardock should deffinatley create a more powerful editor with more editable parts and parts that can be manipulated in different ways rather than scaling and turning and even a texture editor in game would be cool and key since textures really make a huge difference on how a model looks. Well there are lots of points for Stardock to have a look into what Spore has to offer feature wise but either way Im picking my copy up tomorrow so I better hurry and finish my current game tonight I almost have the Drengin finished off before they become godlike from that touching a precursor event and I should be able to score some good points for metaverse.
