Movies Based on Games vs Games Based on Movies

What do you think are the best and worst of each?

My 2 Cents:

I have not seen all of the game-based movies, but the worst I've seen is In The Name Of The King. I sure hope Uwe Boll stays away from C&C and Galciv.

The best I've seen is/are the Resident Evil series.

Star Trek Legacy is my least favorite TV/Movie-based game, although I have not played many others such as Dune or Beowulf.

My current favorite is Battlefront 2.

Frankly, it's hard for me to think of any that are good of either type.

For example: the Resident Evil movies were okay, but if I want a zombie movie, they're pretty low on my list of zombie movies to watch (Shaun of the Dead FTW!).

And almost all of them SUCK. BloodRayne, Dungeon Siege, Doom, anyone? Suck, suck, suckity.

The same is true of video games. Rarely is a game based on a movie worth using as a coaster, much less spending actual time getting involved in. The old school Spider-Man game (from the TV show) was one of the best, but usually they're terrible.

At least, that's how I see it. I'd love to see better games based on movies, and vice versa. It's just hard for me to think of any.

Either way, more often than not they suck.

The "worst" category is just too full to even start!

The "best" of each? Hmm. I'll have to think abut that one some more.

Uwe Boll

I kinda love his wholehearted awfulness.

Well, I haven't seen the Dungeon Siege movie, but BloodRayne was abominable and so was Doom.

I did enjoy the last two RE movies, but I liked the second one best. Also, I thought Hitman was pretty good, although I've never actually played any of the games.

I'm not sure that Legacy and Battlefront 2 count in this category as they are games that are not based on specific movies or television episodes. I played the first Battlefront and didn't care for it because I have little interest in that Battlefield-style of gameplay.

Legacy could have been good if the control scheme weren't so monumentally screwed and the combat didn't actually suck. Space combat in games is supposed to be fun, not work, and somewhere along the way Bethesda lost sight of that idea. The actual release was just a buggy mess - and it's not as though they had to have it out on a timetable like LucasArts was releasing BF2 to coincide with the release of Episode III - the next Star Trek movie isn't slated to come out until the end of next year!

Or we could just play MGS3, and be playing a movie instead of a video game. :P

Yea, I rather liked quite a few of the Star Wars games based on the movies. Battlefront for sure, but also some of the older games like "X-Wing VS. TIE" and there was FPS game that came out a long time ago, Dark Forces maybe??

As for movies based on games...thats quite a bit harder to find good ones.

Tomb Raider was "ok". Maybe Mortal Kombat. No, wait. Not Mortal Kombat...

Speaking of Uwe Boll and the horrible movies he makes, there's currently a petition trying to keep him from directing any more videogame-based movies.

Here's the link from petition online: WWW Link

If you're interested in some more information about what he's made and how he continues to fund moves that continually tank, WWW Link.

To clarify, I don't have anything against Uwe Boll as a person, I just think his "movies" give the game industry a bad name, and we all suffer more because of it. It's one of the reasons that games (and gamers) are marginalized in the entertainment industry, even though we're a major market force. See example below.

By creating movies that have little to no artistic, social, political, or existential merit, he's perpetuating the ill-formed belief that gamers are a freak fringe element that have no ability to create anything of worth.

...the ill-formed belief that gamers are a freak fringe element....

It's even worse if I let it slip that I am a mm...mmmmmm...~Modder~. There! I said it! And I'm Proud, dadburnit! I'm not quite proud enough to mention it on a first date, though............

I'm afraid that I do not know much about links, just the "quote" tags. I believe that you can edit a post until someone else posts a reply.

ps Welcome to the Forum!!!

Movies made from games are practicly nonexistant. And games made out of movies are usualy pretty crappy, though some turn out OK.
