Advent AoE -- can't see anything

Ive had this problem a couple times now playing as Advent, or against Advent, or worse as Advent against Advent -- the Guardian (or Subjagator) AoE fills up the screen with so much whiteness that I cant even see any of the ships. I like effects, but ones that interfere with gameplay are a bit too much. Ships should always appear above the effects. Is there anyway to reduce this effect?

Hmmm, I wonder if you have a video driver/card issue. On my computer when the Guardian does it's thing it's a light dark yellowish bubble that can certainly be seen but it definately doesn't obscure any ships.

Same effect on my old computer with an ATI x800 and now my new ATI HD3870.

it's the white tenticle starbursts, not sure if its the guardian or subjagator. when there's more then one in an area i can barely see ships. and im using a 8600mt, newish card with recent driver, hmm....

When there is so many guardians or subjagators the transparency effect stacks and makes it almost opaque. I know the problem he is talking about. I actually hate when it happens not because I can barely see units but because it slows the system down to a crawl.

It is the guardian. It's not a big issue if it's just a few ships, but the effect stacks on to itself, so get 10+ guardians casting it in the same spot, and it's a very bright effect that is impossible to see through.

It's the Guardian's Shield Projection.

The severity of it seems to vary with the background and the number of Guardians. I took these pictures a while ago for another thread, but here's the example...

Ten Guardians with the deep space background.

Ten Guardians with the dark background.

Ten Guardians with a bright background.

A few Guardians on a dark background is barely noticeable, but as you increase the number of Guardians you can see the effect better. And on lighter backgrounds it is unmistakable.

I use an 8800GTS (640mb) with the effects and things set to high.

Double post, sorry. Weird forums.

Well, I'm glad it's not just my eyes.
I have this too and with usually less than 10 guardians. I have to scroll all the way in in order to be able to see anything.

The visual effect shouldn't stack then, or more then twice. I've also had my system lock up when zooming in to utter whiteness with two Advent fleets fighting.

Zoom in.

Sounds like a duck tape fix to me.

Anyhow, you gotta get past the insane slowdown and lockups to zoom in. Those transparency effects shouldn't stack, it kills performance.

Wow, I can honestly say I have never seen this or any slowdowns. I do have an ATI card though. My impression that the last few Nvidia driver releases have been pretty crappy. Who knows. But there must be a difference between the way ATI and Nvidia render those effects.

Nah its not the drivers. At least I don't think so. You could try to get a whole bunch of guardians and let them spam their shield skill. Thats when the slowdown occurs. Other than that I'm at 60fps@ 1680x1050 with 4x AA. Sometimes I see it dip to the 40s. But thats only when my screen is filled up with units.

Someone should make a thread requesting that these effects not stack. It's the main (only?) cause of graphical slowdown I face.

Especially with the Advent's tentacle starbust effect, multiple instances of it occurring at once destroy my performance.

Here's a thread addressing this issue generally.

Are you Advent fighting Advent with large fleets? It's not a problem with just a couple Guardians, its when you have multiples in both fleets that the screen becomes a white hole....
