What gives them experence?

Capital ships we all love them however I was wondering how xp is assigned?

1) they only get xp for their own kills in a system
2) they get full xp for any ship killed in a system they are in even if it is by defences or other ships.
3) they get full xp for all kills they are involved in eg. ones where they have damaged the ships in question.

I have noticed that if 2 C ships are on a target the xp is split 50/50 to each ship.

They get XP for all kills in system as I understand it, and yes, experience is split between all capital ships. Kind of an incentive not to use too many at once as they'll all level slowly.

OK seems to be a bit of a discussion here anyone else want to chime in with an answer?

If I want to power level a weak Cship can I just take it to pirates and then use a massive fleet to wipe out all the ships?

It gets exp for anything your ships kill. EXP is split evenly between all capital ships, so if you kill a 100xp ship with one capital ship, you'll get 100 exp. If you have two, they'll each get 50xp, etc.

How about if your cap ship does not attack anything but your other ships kill lots?

Then your capital ship will gain all the XP. Yes, you can power level a capital ship that way.

Pirate base would seem like a good place to power level new cap ships against nice weak ships. Has anyone tried this in online play?

Capital ships get experience from any kills in the same gravity well, regardless of whether they contributed to the kill.

Each kill has a fixed number of experience points associated with it. These points are split uniformly among any capital ships within the gravity well.
