Ship Spamming-comments, concerns, questions, etc.

For gentlemen (and gentlewomen?) only

Ship spamming is one of the most sensitive issues on the forums. It has created a deep rift between those that condone it as n00bish and lame and those who call it just another trick of the tactical trade. Previous posts regarding this volatile topic have almost immediately degenerated into flame-filled rants between players. This post is an attempt to be able to have that debate, but have it in a way where reasonable, coherent ideas actually get through.

I'll go first:

My multiplayer experience is limited at best, but I can tell you that the AI cranks out siege frigates the way a depression-era mint cranks out money. To say the least, it ruins the immersion. Now, I play this game because of it's (in a deliciously sci-fi way) realism. Would a real state really crank out siege frigates like this? I don't think so. Frankly, I don't see why the purists like me are more angry than those who play multiplayer. I would think that multiplayer players play the game for the strategy and tactics rather than the realism. To recap: siege spamming (and other spamming in general, I've only really covered siege spamming) ruins immersion, but is really just another trick in the tactical book, not a n00bish exploit that deserves to get people banned.

Spam is a strategy in name only. It's like saying a build order is a strategy. Technically, yeah, it is, but in the heart of what strategy means, it doesn't qualify at all.

In the case of siege frigates, spamming them is just a huge waste of time and resources against anyone who's played more than a couple of games and it just makes the AI that much easier to beat (at least, it did before the patch). After the patch, with the myriad nerfs to the ship, it's an even bigger waste.

As for spamming in general, players abusing spam is never the core issue. If a strategy like that is the most effective use of time and resources, it's what people are going to do. Competitive players would be stupid 'not' to do it.
