Fix it yourself Bugs ---originally posted by Hawaii 5-0

Now that I'm more familiar with the base GalCiv data files, I'm noticing there are a few problems with some of the files.

If you are comfortable using NotePad, you can easily fix these files.

The following is the list of discrepancies I've come across, feel free to add your own. Perhaps StarDock will see this list and fix the files listed as well.

FILE: \Data\UP_Issues\AbilityBonus01.upissue
ISSUE: The file says ability bonus, but the UP Issue contained within is a dupe of the UP HQ issue.
REMEDY: Rename the file so it no longer has a .upissue extension, for example .BADupissue

FILE: \Data\UP_Issues\StarbaseTax02.upissue
ISSUE: The file says StarbaseTax02, but the UP Issue contained within is named StarbaseTax01, and there is another StarbaseTax01 out there.
REMEDY: Rename the issue to StarbaseTax02, like so:
//--------------------
UPISSUE StarbaseTax02
//--------------------

FILE: \Data\UP_Issues\TradeFed01.UPISSUE
ISSUE: The Trade Federation is supposed to charge you 10% of your trade, instead it only charges 1%
REMEDY: Change OptionVal01 from 1 to 10. Contrary to appearances, this is not a Yes/No UP Issue, the percent to charge is governed by the OptionVal of the winning choice. In this case Yes should equal 10.

FILE: \Data\UP_Issues\TradeFed02.UPISSUE
ISSUE: The Trade Federation is supposed to charge you 10% of your trade, instead it only charges 1%
REMEDY: Same as above, change OptionVal01 from 1 to 10.

FILE: \Data\SoldieringAbility01.ANOMALY
ISSUE: The Morale anomaly is affecting Ship Defense, not Morale.
REMEDY: Find the ANOMOLY Morale section of the file. Change Quantity from 2 to 4. (Yes, Quantity, kind of goofy, I know).

FILE: \Data\achievements.imp
ISSUE: The Technology capital does not double research as advertised. It's only granting a 10% bonus.
REMEDY: Find the IMPROVEMENT TechnologyCapital section of the file. Change Research_Improvement_Bonus from 10 to 100.

FILE: \Data\bonusevents.event
ISSUE: The event Pods01 is supposed to grant a Research bonus for the Neutral and Evil options, but it does not.
REMEDY: Change GoodAttribute/NeutralAttribute/EvilAttribute from 8 to 9.

FILE: \Data\bonusevents.event
ISSUE: The event MoNatives does not affect your Morality.
REMEDY: Change MoralityWeight from 10 to 5.

FILE: \Data\bonusevents.event
ISSUE: The event PrecursorShip does not affect your Morality.
REMEDY: Change MoralityWeight from 6 to 5.

FILE: \Data\coreevents.event
ISSUE: The event Research01 is supposed to grant a Research bonus for the Neutral and Evil options, but it does not.
REMEDY: Change GoodAttribute/NeutralAttribute/EvilAttribute from 8 to 9.

Posted a 'bump' using the less-than and greater-than symbols around the 'bump' part, evidently this board takes that as code for something, so took the post but snipped the text. :)

I edited my files as described above, I can confirm at this point that the fixes to +research and the one to the morale anomalies work just fine. Got a nice +60% research planet in my current game because of this fix. :)

Thanks Duglis for the fixes.

There is a water aliens (waliens) event file which should give research bonuses as well. Don't think I downloaded it as a Mod so it should have come from the game.

In it the GoodAttribute/NeutralAttribute/EvilAttribute is also equal to 8. I assume we should also fix that to 9?

Yeah, I have that, it's a Nephrinn mod.

BTW, for anyone who was wondering, I implemented all the fixes above except the first one (not quite sure I understand the implications of that one so passed it by), and then started a new game. It posted just now to the Metaverse just fine, so no worries there if anyone was holding back on the fixes for fear their games wouldn't post.

Since these bugs have been around forever, and are this easy to fix, is there any reason why they haven't actually been fixed by StarDock?

The latest version of waliens.event has been fixed, so if you downloaded it after April 24, you don't need to change it.

Hey Duglis,
Does moddifying these affect submitting to Metaverse, like the folks getting zero score, and the anom error thing when they try to submit?

Also, does this mean folks could be modifying these files with extra bonuses not meant to be there, such as 200 or 300 on the research fix above instead of 100, and thus gaining a huge advantage over the AI?

Just curious. ;)

Well as the events are available to the AI as well as the player, I don't think creating huge bonuses would necessarily be unbalancing. It would make +2 speed even more powerful though.

Not that I don't trust you folks, but I'd really like to get an official opinion on this... could Frogboy maybe give us a yea or nay on the validity of these fixes?
I believe you there, but that doesn't necessarily = being sanctioned, could just mean that the changes are going unnoticed...

Do you really think the Stardock team is so insane as to declare obvious bug fixes to be banned from metaverse submission? *chuckle*

The only danger was if they were somehow auto-banned by the software as 'tampered' files, and they aren't, so all is good.

Vorlin:

But the point I'm making is that you're assuming 1 - that these are in fact bugs and 2 - that the corrections given correctly fix them.

I'm sure you guys are probably right, but that makes me wonder why such simple corrections weren't already addressed in any one of the several patches aready released. So it would be nice to hear from someone official that these are "ok".

These changes are fine, although it's probably better just to delete AbilityBonus01.upissue. If we change it for a unique event, it'll get replaced.

These changes haven't been addressed before because they were minor and we had crashes to worry about. I fixed them for the demo version, though. So the fixes should be in the next update.

Is the News Network supposed to give a 2% economy bonus, or a 20% economy bonus? I'm wondering because a 2% econ bonus doesn't do much unless the planet puts out 50 BC before the bonus is applied.

Thanks CariElf. Its nice of you to address these issues.

yes, thanks for the thumbs up...

i hope my previoius comment wasn't misconstrued as whining about the patching, because that wasn't intended...

Nicolas Bossy I looked up on JavaScout's site as to if those are bugs or not and they seem to not be....the News Network gives a 2% bonus http://webpages.charter.net/trevorpowdrell/NewsNetwork.htm and Info Net Prestige is 1% http://webpages.charter.net/trevorpowdrell/InfoNet.htm

The reason I'm asking is because all of the other bonuses are multiples of 5. These 1% and 2% bonuses don't do very much because the base values have to be very high, which is impossible to do.

The 1% influence bonus for the info net is almost certainly a typo. Research lab has 10%, research center has 10%, galactic research center has 10%, so I'm thinking that it's about 99% certain that info net is supposed to have 10% as well since it is in the same class of buildings.

It would seem strange to me for the news network to have 20% economy (that would make it pretty profitable very early on), but I agree that 2% isn't of any use either unless it's during the last phase of the game. I'd like to see it set at 5%, that seems about right to me.
