Depends on my Alignment, really. For example if I'm playing with the Good path I name them after heroic battles, leaders, and warships of the past. Usually American, British, German, or Japanese names.

If I'm playing with the Evil dark side, I usually give them intimidating titles, or even various religious extremist ones. In one game I named my leader the Ayatollah of the Islamic Republic of Earth and gave all my ships and systems names of Iranian cities. :D

Gravitas Free Zone
Low Gravitas Warning Signal
Absolutely No You-Know-What
Little Gravitas
Zero Gravitas

(a small selection, if you like sci-fi and haven't read Banks you're missing out...)

IMB: "it was a scathing review of Culture ship-naming policy delivered by another Involved civilisation. They suggested that such enormously powerful and intellectually refined entities ought to have names with a little more gravitas, to reflect their near-god-like status; the immediate and sustained reaction of one of the Culture's ship manufacturies was to name all its subsequent vessels things like: Stood Far Back When The Gravitas Was Handed Out; Gravitas, What Gravitas?;
Gravitas... Gravitas... No, Don't Help Me, I'll Get It In A Moment...; Gravitas Free Zone; Low Gravitas Warning Signal, etc etc (including the Zen-like absolutely No You-No-What). I am so sad I have a separate list of the Gravitas ships at home. It currently runs to about 20, I think."

If I recall correctly, the ships often renamed themselves.

The Culture is great fun, and the ship names (or "fleet" names, for want of a better term - like the Interesting Times Gang) were the best. :)

Finally found this myself... Don't think it is explained in the manual.

If you click on a ship, you will notice its stats along the bottom screen near the I button. Now. Click on the name. Voila.

I rarely name my ships.. maybe I should!

I do name all my systems though. All based on Pern names and character and such. So I've got Benden and Fort, and Ruatha, Ramoth, Pern of course, Menolly.. so on and so forth.

Bitra for instance, is a class 15 usually.. or less, a pitiful planet. Pern always is a very nice one. LOL
