Does a starbase have to be BESIDE a planet?

Do the mining (social & military) upgrades give their bonuses to all planets in the sector, or just planets to which they're directly adjacent?

I'm a little cunfused because the description of the economic upgrade that adds to social and military production specifically says it's a sector-wide benefit, whereas the mining upgrades do not, as far as I can see.

... the mining upgrades refer to the resources found floating around in space that you have to attach the starbase directly to

if you plant a starbase in the middle of a sector without attaching it to a resource, then the mining stuff is not applicable

(hopefully i haven't made an incorrect statement here)

yes they should be a sector wide thing.

some are specific to that sector and others work also in the adjacent sectors around the starbase

hope this helps

Starbase mining and economic modules enhance production for all colonies in that sector. This makes sectors with 2 or more good systems rather valuable.

It's not a bad idea to place your starbases next to a system for convenience. It means you can always run a battlehammer or two out to defend it.

All colonies or all YOUR colonies? If another civ has a planet in the sector as well, will it benefit from your starbase's improvements?

Star Base Bonuses are normally limited to only you, unless they are your allies, and the UP issue "Starbases are shared between allies" issue has been passed.

As far as I know, anyways. ;)

As Star Pilot says.

There's no reason your starbase would aid Drengin colonies in the same sector, unless you're allied and the UP resolution has passed.

Do all starbase effects only affect colonies and units in the same sector, or are there some that have empire-wide effects? I other words, is there any point in me grabbing a resource in a sector where I have no colonies, except to deny it to other civs?

Yes. Resources are empire-wide. Mining modules that enhance your resource mining also have empire-wide effects.

Influence affects are not limited to the sector the star base is in.

Also, star bases extend how far your ships may travel. They act as a 'colony' in determining permissable range of travel.

But (to return to what I thought the original question was)

Is there any point/benefit in building a star base NEXT to an enemy system - does this increase the influence effect or will building it anywhere in the sector have the same influence effect?

What about with the new beta?

"+ Sector Influence is now weighted between the distance of the nearest starbase and the distance of the nearest star."

That should still be sectored based, Vanir. Just a guess of mine, but that would be logically consistant.

Before sector Influence was figures simply based on the neares source of influence. Now sector influence is figured based on the (presumably) mean distance between the nearest starbase and colony. Planetary influence is still unchanged.
