Orbital Refineries

Can someone break down how these work, and the strategies for placing them? I know they grab resources from nearby systems, but...they are grabbing them from your resources right? When I originally looked these up, there were a few threads that stated they shouldn't go in every system, that systems can only support so many. Normally I'm only looking for the tactical answer, but in this case I'd like to understand exactly how they work as well.

Put your cursor over a metal/crystal extractor, it'll say "Refinery Quota" - that's the max refineries they can support (typically 3).

3 refineries at one planet will fill the quota of it's own and all planets within one jump.

Pretty much you want this set up.

X = Planets with extractors
R = Planet with Refineries
.. = blank space 'cause the forum don't like double spaces.

Up to three Refineries will service one extractor except neutral extractors which get four. They service everything within one phase jump. You want to try and have a little overlap as possible, as cheap as possible, servicing the most planets possible. Take priority to Ice and Volcanic planets. Refinery ships don't use phase stabilizers for balance reasons but they still travel faster.
