Sins of a Solar Empire: INVASION is an addon project aiming to expand upon the existing universe of the Sins of a Solar Empire, providing original and high-quality content on top of the original game. Aside from the new content, the addon will also include multiplayer-friendly gameplay changes as well as reworked or new visuals/sounds.

Planned changes/content will include:

  •  A new playable race, created to the highest quality standards. The Xin are a race of utterly alien origin, and the massive fleets of their living, semi-sentient ships have been ravaging the galaxy for millenia. Countless races have perished under their onslaught - and now TEC, Advent and the Vasari will have to face this terrible enemy and win - or die trying.
    Assume the role of the defenders and try to stem the tide of death and destruction, or take command of the invading armada and destroy the impertinent insects wherever they choose to make their last stand. 
  • Volumetric Explosions & Damage Effects, providing not only greater excitement to your space battles by transforming all explosions and persistent damage effect into true 3D affairs, but also better visual cues as to how the battle is going, enabling you to spot at a first glance the hotspots and even the level of damage on particular ships.
  • Dynamic Battle System, where each ship class' strenghts and uses are not determined only by its stats and abilities, but also by its flight characteristics. Certain ship classes will be able to move during fleet battles, which, coupled with the reworked stats of all ship classes should prevent "cookie-cutter" or "spam" strategies.
  • New Ship Classes for the new faction, ranging from specialist ships such as the Warmaster or Emperor Battlecruiser all the way to Titans acting as mobile superweapons capable of facing down an entire fleet on their own or even destroying an entire gravity well in one powerful surge.
  • Reworked Balancing, aiming to further focus various ship classes on their roles, removing any overlapping advantages which ultimately make one ship type or the other the ship to produce. Changes will also include increased gravity wells as well as greater class difference in turning rates and top speeds in order to further accentualize fleet placement, strategic positioning of forward bases and other such details which a great admiral make.
  • New Planet Types, which will also be visually enhanced, primarily by increasing their size in order to make them a true centerpiece of a given sector. New planet types will provide greater variety without providing game-breaking advantages to players.
  • Enlarged Gravity Wells which, coupled with the dynamic nature of space combat, will challenge players to an even greater level, requiring careful placements of planetary defenses and orbital structures, as well as fleets.
  • Unique Structures for the new faction, ranging from formidable Heavy Defense Batteries to deployable Outposts which will be capable of guarding even sectors around otherwise uninhabitable astronomical bodies such as stars or gas giants.

Love the work so far Manshooter.  I can't wait for final release and the eventual battle between your races and those of 7DS.  Maybe Star/Clad will up some hardcode limits just to make it possible. 

 

You forgot the TCA doofus!  And remember, the Empire has the Executor for when aliens think they are allowed to have supercapital-class ships.

Reading up on this idea, I only have one question, are you by chance going to make it an ability to ram other ships. i think it might be a good idea to kamikaze a crippled ship into another. Just a thought.

The Overlord capital ship should provide you with hours of screaming fun then. ;)

The Remnant will actually have a dedicated fireship designed to go down in flames and take a few of them with it!

Hey ManSh00ter, long time lurker first time poster here. I finally thought it necessary to post in this thread simply because this is by far one of the best mod projects I've ever seen, and that includes anything from Half-Life to Civilization and the Total War series... all great communities with great mod projects past and present.

 

I'd have to say however, that this mod stands out among most I've seen in that the release necessitates completion, and for that I must say thank you and keep up the strict adherence to detail and balance. Too many mod projects come out in a shamble and continue to lumber along under the sheer force of content.

 

Anyway, I know there are a lot of people here anxious and excited to see this project through (perhaps a bit too many in the last few posts :P ) but I've been waiting patiently since you first posted this thread and expect to wait a bit more for what looks to be one of the most well-done mods in recent memory. Thanks again for your work and a reason for many of us to look forward to playing Sins again.

Xarchon, thank you very much! If creative urge is the engine behind mod making, then continued support like this is the "booster fuel" which gives that extra little oomph to the effort. ;)

And now the eyecandy. You know me, when I say "today" I actually mean "tomorrow". :p

These are CGI renders of the Chimera Mothership - coming very soon are the ingame shots complete with the two types of Chimera-only drones which act as substitutes for its complete lack of weaponry.

 

Keep in mind, these are WIP, there are some minor details which need to be corrected, but nothing so glaring as to warrant making you all wait for that eyecandy fix (and possibly waylaying innocent hobbits suspected of carrying an early beta version of the mod... ;)

Next in line is the Wyrm, and then finally, the Leviathan. That done, it will mark the completion of the entire ship line for the Episode I and the biggest chunk of work DONE! The Wyrm will have its debut as a standard update, but the allmighty Leviathan will have the honor to star in the second and final teaser movie for The Last Stand: Episode I. Expect to see epic fleet action, set against epic-sized planets, with epic score and epic pwnage, all rendered ingame! Did I say it will be epic? Well, it will be. Epic.

Wow that is one beautiful ship!  I can't wait till the release of this mod, one question though will you be allowing other modders (such as myself) to merge your mod to theirs immediately or will we have to wait a month or so till you have enough downloads of the stand alone?

Perhaps this has been asked ... but has there been ANY communication between you and Stardock as far as them picking this up as an actual expansion to the game? THAT would be very worthwhile and rewarding. :-) Have you tried contacting them at all?

Boshimi, well first and foremost I am interested in seeing how popular this mod is going to be when it goes live. That's a true test. Mods getting "adopted" is not unheard of, but as far as I know for that to happen the project has to show some real impact when it comes to people actually downloading and playing it. That still remains to be seen in the case of Last Stand. :)

Gamerking, as Mr_Blunt3d said, the Chimera can spawn a number of powerful "spore drones". These drones are somewhat equal to the actual frigate drones and can have either an anti-fighter/bomber role in the case of the Spiker Spore or an anti-ship role in the case of the Hunter Spore. For all intents and purposes, they act as fighters, but are larger and way  tougher (takes longer to replace lost ones though).

This gives the Chimera some protection, but always keep in mind its a colony ship, not intended for frontline duty. Its actual greatest strength and worth is the ability to construct Xin Outposts in any gravity well, even around a star.

Mods getting "adopted" is not unheard of

 

Yeah that happened with the Sisters of Battle MOD for Dawn of War. Relic used their mod to make the sisters of battle for Soulstorm (though don't get me started on that :P)
