A question, bug, and suggestion

Question: What are some good strategies for fleet combat? Are there differences in weapon damage based on the ship or if their shields are down or not? For example, are laser weapons really good against shields but poor against damaging the hull? I don't remember hearing anything about that in the tutorials.

Bug: When I play as the TEC (don't know if it does this for other races or not) and create a fleet with light frigates and other units and jump them into another system, they usually engage correctly but sometimes the light frigates move immediately to the edge of the gravity well and just sit there. This is when the unit formation is on standard too...
Also, sometimes fleets (friendly or hostile) will attack a ship but that ship will be moving around the gravity well (like a trade ship) so they get totally decimated by actual enemy ships near them along the way. Maybe if they re-evaluated their position more frequently in order to pick targets closer to them?

Suggestion: When moving fleets across to another gravity well, it would be nice to select where they go in the remote gravity well. Right now they jump in and stick around the edge of the well but if you could click near the planet and have the move arrows show up there as an indicator that would be nice. Also, is there a way to move ships but also select which way they face when they get there? Usually, it's like a click and hold and then drag or something. I couldn't figure out if this was in the game or not...

They jump in relative to the position they jumped out - so if you jumped out a bit to the west of the phase lane, they'll show up west of the phase lane when they land. We won't be able to jump them into the middle of the grav well, though.

Currently, you also can't control their facing like that, but it's on the IC wish list, I believe.

I think he is suggesting that we be able to queue the move the fleet makes after it jumps into the system.

I could be wrong (I've only played 2 real games, and got my ass handed to me on the 1st), but I think you can currently only say "Go to this system" and not "Go to this system, then move to this point" (which would just be two queued moves).

Oh, in that case you can queue :) First show them to jump, then hold shift and give orders inside the grav well (even if it's fog-of-war'd, but you had to have explored it previously).

You won't see the queued order arrows until they jump through, but it's doable :)

Ahh ok, yep, that's what I was wondering. I'll give that a shot here in my next game. It would be nice to see the queued order arrow (patch maybe?).

Has anyone else seen that bug? It happens to me quite a bit.

You can't see them while paused, that's on IC's wish list (acknowledged). Otherwise, the jumping and normal order arrows just don't mix for some reason. They're there, but you don't see queued orders unless they're in the same grav well.
