Petition for Single Player Campaigns!

I cannot be the only one who enjoys them, can I?!

Title says it all. This is an attempt to convince Stardock to craft us all at least one Single Player Campaign. (Preferably one for each race, but at least one) Please? I really enjoy them, and I can't be the only person who does. So, who's with me? Thanks! Just a /signed would be great to show Stardock we are interested!

We don't need a petition matey, they have already stated that they fully intend to release a single player campaign! Worry not :)

I'm not with you sorry. i think its a waste of time to work on a campaign when they released all the tools the community needs to make custom maps .

modding a campaign is just taking some custom maps and putting them 2gther with a story.

i think they should focus on fixing bugs , maybe improve the diplomacy , add a on/off pirates button since alot of ppl find them annoying..

add some more tutorials so new players can understand the game better...

ohh and on multiplayer when u pause the game u cant open the chat window.. i think that should be fixed as well...

adding a campaign is the last thing they should do right now...but if they fix all of the above (and more stuff i'm sure other ppl mentioned) and they have time then a campaign will be nice.

cheers.

i'm officially not endorsing this petition. this game is sandbox. there's more important things for the devs to help us with right now.

The Dev's have actually committed themselves to a fully fledged campaign (presumably 3) to be released in an expantion in around a year, if I recall correctly.

With almost a full year devoted to campaigns, they should be great, in true Ironclad/Stardock style.  :d

We don't need a campaign, keep working on sandbox mode, AI and modding tools instead! Those are what will keep the game alive in the long run.

That is great news, I wasn't aware of that. To those that disagree, I don't think you realize that many people enjoy playing campaigns, and the lack of one is a detriment to the overall quality of this game as it stands.

Why a campaign? In random single player maps you can have a lot of fun! I like not knowing where i am who my opponents are.... A campaign is usually something where you not granted access to all the technologies and weapons until the last missions! Non sense! In soase you're free. Do some people fear freedom?

I like though more events in the single player games, different regarding the type of factions... Behavior more attached to biology (advents hate TEC... Vasari hate everyone.. so humans tend to be natural allies in most case...)

In my opinion each race needs a campaign, a fleshed out history and motivation. If you focus on sandbox mode it just becomes a simulator with generic races.

I'm in for one campaign for each race.

Even though I like the sandbox principle very much, I like being told good a story too.

A campaign needn't be made of separate maps, instead it should be a "galactic" sized map where you have to accomplish objectives to expand and unlock new technologies.

I'm for it. It's not like them adding a campaign will take away from the game we already have. It'll just add something new.

What would a campaign be like for this type of game. If it is extremely linear and basically guides you and tells you what to do for conquest...leave it out.

I'm with those that want a campaign solely to both flesh out and continue the storyline, though i am undecided as to how they should do it. The GalCiv (1 and 2) campaigns were functional for story purposes but they werent very fun (or atleast not nearly as fun as the "sandbox" games).

Personally rather than distinct missions i would go for, a huge galaxy (150-200+ planets and atleast 6 stars) and then galactic events for key points.

Definitely pass on this one. I'd rather they devote the time to expand / further develop the sandbox and multi-player experience.

Once a campaign is complete most people never return to them. Having said that I suppose you could always expand the tutorial section to include campaign settings, but its still a waste of developer effort and other resources.

I hope IC/SC do not focus on a campaign. I loved that they said, we'll keep it skirmishes, only because campaigns are a waste.

Who wants to be artificially limited in what you can build/do for "storyline". The point of the game is to create your own STORY. Fictionalize it as you play, believe you're doing it for some greater good, or you're some forgiving president or brute dictator.

Let your story be played by your ACTIONS, not some scripted events.

I absolutely applaud IC/SD's decision not to focus on campaign. They have their priorities set.

A campian is a must. Many Great games that today we consider, icons of RTS/TBS/4x had good histories.

A campain, is not just maps linked,is a tale, that if told right with good cutscenes can make a game a very good thing.

This game is made for Sandbox and Multiplayer (online and LAN).

I am not going to petition....

i'd love a campaign, just for the depth into each race and their culture.

also if u ever add an extra race(i dunno in an expansion pack or something), make it like the dolphin race like in sword of the stars, i thought that was a great idea for a race.
this way u could add water planets too.

Yeah, but how often are you going to play the campaign? Once. Using up developer time for a feature that most won't spend much time playing is a waste.

Let's talk about those 'icons of RTS' and their campaigns. How often did you finish the Starcraft campaign as opposed to multiplayer? Age of Empires? Company of Heroes?

On the other hand, look at the 'icons of TBS'. Civilization. GalCiv. Massive Assault. Master of Orion. Master of Magic.

They have no campaigns, instead they are purely sandbox / multiplayer. (Yes, GC and MA have campaigns, but hardly anyone plays them, hence it got dropped for MA Network.)

There are a few games that use a different approach (the UFO / XCom series), where it's dynamic campaign. Steel Panthers as well, although that game shines more in PBEM sandbox battles.

I think scenari like the ones the Civilization games have would be nice.

offcourse u wont play the campaign much more than once per race.

However, the story behind it just adds an extra dimension to the game as ur playing it, even in skirmish.

The thing with a campaign is that it gives you objectives and usually an outline of a strategy without coming up with one on your own (and I think that this is where the game shines). Maybe as you expand and research little bits of fluff can be accessed like in Earth 2150. A small cutscene or video heralding your triumphs or something.

I think the devs said that they'd add the campaign in the expansion after they made the sandbox as good as they could, and the modability is already there, they just need to release the tools so we can get the files out of binary.

A campaign need not be like in GalCiv2, or a traditional RTS. Think of Alpha Centauri. It had a fantastic story, which played out not in missions, but in the things that happened, and the technologies researched, in the sandbox gameplay.

Basically, I want to see what the Vasari are running from. And I want to see what the Advent have planned for their revenge. And I want to see whether the guy from the opening cutscene gets to go home to his kid. ;) Whether it's a traditional campaign or more of a series of events you can have happen in a sandbox game, I want to see what the developers have planned for the grand, overall story. (But I don't mind at all waiting for an expansion.)

As for the moddability... I read that there's no scripting languages, and no other victory conditions but the default. Doesn't really setup things very well for fan-made campaigns, though I very much look forward to seeing what people come up with anyway.
