Ally Command question

Last night I was playing a 2V2 , and I stumbled upon a menu where I had options to set a system as a target for my Ally to attack or defend, but it was early in the game. Later, the AI started attacking one of my Allies' worlds, I sent my fleet to defend, but he had his fleet parked at my homeworld for no apparent reason while his planet was getting glassed.

I couldn't for the life of me remember how I got the Ally command menu. Anybody remember how to do this? Do the Allies actually pay attention to this? Thanks in advance.

You need to select allied ships to get the command buttons. The easiest way to do it zoom out until you see the side bars around the planets (where ships show up as pips). You can then click on the side bar to select all the allied ships around that planet, and you'll get the 3 command buttons on the bottom UI bar.

The allies do treat them as nudges rather than "Yes, master, I will go there now" - that is they have their own interests so they may or may not follow the command, depending on what it is.
