Sins Beta 4 Technical Feedback - *POST HERE*

Sins Beta 4 Technical Feedback - *POST HERE*

And so it begins....again.

This thread is for technical feedback for Sins of a Solar Empire Beta 4.

Please reply to this post if you'd like to make: a bug report, let us know about a compatibility issue, graphics issues, performance reports, etc. (i.e., technical stuff).

Before making a report, please be aware that the minimum system requirements for Beta 4 are:

  • Windows XP SP2 / Vista
  • 1.8 GHz Processor
  • 512 MB RAM (1 GB RAM for Vista)
  • 128 MB 3D DirectX Video Card
  • DirectX 9.0c
  • LAN or Broadband Internet Connection for Multiplayer

IMPORTANT:  When making a post about a bug, be certain to include - your system specs, a description of the bug you encountered, what you were doing when the bug occurred (how to reproduce it), and if it was reproducible or not.  We won't be able to make changes to the game without detailed information.

If you encounter a crash, Sins should automatically generate a minidump file. Please send the generated exception and a DirectX diag report to support(at)ironcladgames(dot)com along with a detailed description as outlined above. Minidump files are located in (please note these directories are hidden by Windows):

XP: C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire
Vista: C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\

If you'd like to give us some non-technical feedback, please post it here:

https://forums.sinsofasolarempire.com/index.aspx?AID=166574

By keeping this information in one place, it will go a long way towards us making Sins a better game!

Thanks!

I experienced an in-game crash in a LAN multiplayer game tonight -- no minidump generated, I had to shut down the computer to get the program to actually close when I hit "send report". I do, however, have a debug log -- should I send that in? (And if so, can someone remind me of the address?)

Minor bug: Refinery ships will visit a mine on one of your planets, even if you don't own the mine in question. (Cultural takeover)

today i got this message on my windows vista when i clicked the application link to start sins of a solar empire:

Could not detect if Archive File is Binary or Text: C:\Users\rtrimmer\AppData\Roaming\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Setting\user.setting

thing is, ive played this game before, not 3 days ago, i had a 6 hour game saved, i dont know what happened, any help would be appreciated, i made a ticket thing with stardock, but any faster help would be welcome

Weird Bug: Canceling a capitol ship at roughly the time its due to complete appears to cancel construction, but not return the resources spent.

Game doesn't work in 64bit OSes, even in compatibility modes. I have tried this in 64bit XP and Vista Ultimate to same effect. Doesn't seem to be isolated to hardware.

we have users who can run it on 64 bit already, so its not solely the fact that you have 64bit.

Have ran into a issue I have not seen in the forums. When entering the game, does not matter if it is single player multiplayer or IronClad. My home planet is ghosted, can see only the astroids no ships, If I click on a ship, it displays it's path, but no textures, etc.
If I go and explore a different planet I can see my ships until the background switch's to either a light blue or red, then all icons for any building or ship disappears. I do have 2 saved games that I did save as soon as it happened, I played the second one for awhile, but when I tried to colonize a second system, all the planets were ghoset and could not see even where I placed a building or defensive structure.
Using XP pro with Nvidia 163.71 drivers. Will zip and send in saved games with DXdiag included

Glenn

Bit of s small problem, my documents redirects to a server mapped drive where all my information is stored. So, under the local, my documents\my login name\app data\name of game directory is not there, nither is it under my remote my documents directory. So, I cannot find the savegame directory. Is there anywhere in the game config files that shows the location?

The files aren't under my docs. They are at C:\Documents and Settings\

This was resolved by support and turned out to be a corrupt galaxy file, not an OS specific issue.

Z-axis control

Some strange behaviour I saw yesterday whilst experimenting with a TEC Scout Frigate in the Z-axis.

1) Move to the highest point in a planetery system then try to phase jump out and the frigate seems to struggle to find the exit path of the gravity well, it did it eventually but it took 60s or more and seemed to get stuck having selected what seemed to be an odd/in-direct path.

2) You arrive at the default space lane entrance point to the new system, I wasn't expecting this is this right?

3) Phase jump back to the previous system leaving via the same point just you arrived from and the frigate returned to the highest point in that system which I wasn't expecting either.

4) So this time I went back to the 2nd system, moved to the highest point there and tried to jump back and again the frigate wanted to return the 0 Z axis plane by the default space lane after struggling to get out of the gravity well a second time.

5) I found the Z axis movement control/orders quite hit and miss because by simply selecting a point in space it difficult to work out where that is in 3D you need a drag and drop triangle to show you the vector. The best work around I found was to select the point then pan the camera angle around and adjust my previous selection by issuing a 2nd movement order.

Is there a way to see the gravity well in 3D?

Huh? Do you mean you arrive "on top" of the phase lane as in prior versions?

disturbing: when I reloaded some multiplayer saves, it took me some time to orient myself, because the view was completely unfocused. I try to explain, it was like I was with my mouse way zoomed out, staring from below instead of above (I know, all is relative) and not looking at any planet, but into void. so first I have to spin around to even find something and then I have to orient, so that I have roughly the camera position I had before the save. not a big deal, but definately irritating.

"Sins just locked on me in a multiplayer game, and while I'm sitting around watching it to see if it creates a minidump file, it's chewing through a gig. First crash since beta2.

Doesn't seem to want to die properly. Details.

Multiplayer 1v1 with chickenfur. Current activities were managing a battle in one of his gravity wells, something of everything in frigates on both sides, no cruisers, one carrier and one dreadnaught type capital ship on my end. The dreadnaught was on autocast with the siege platforms and had the bombardment upgrade as well, otherwise I was using no abilities. There was an enemy Kol and I think an akkan in the well, some hangar bays, a repair bay, planetary bombardment had just started. There was also a bunch of pirates attacking him at the same time there. Chickenfur might can give more details about his end, if he crashed too maybe he got something out of it besides a lockup. I was about to flip the pirate base, might have been well timed for that too."

I was playing my first multi-player game with phsyco. I have an older cmp p4 3.2 ghz nvdia 6800. And sins froze in the middle of the game. I had to kill the process and then I was able to go back into windows. I don't know why it crashed

No not above but at the zero level in the z-axis i.e. in the 2D plane where the default SoaSE ships occupy.

Note sure I do, so its possible the devs aren't either. Are you saying that you jumped out from "above" the default grav well plane, and when you jumped in you landed on the default grav well plane?

Yes thats right, along with the other z-axis points/observations of course like the return journey.

Apparently, you aren't the only one who thinks so... I've had a couple of PM's from people asking if I'm going to post a "known issues" thread and the like.

unless 3-D structure placement gets incorporated, this is going to have to stay as is. otherwise you ahve balance issues.
3) Phase jump back to the previous system leaving via the same point just you arrived from and the frigate returned to the highest point in that system which I wasn't expecting either.

this I found interesting...

so you jumped from "here" to arrive instead at "there"?

I ran the idea by Yarlen in IRC already, the general consensus was that people weren't going to read it anyway, which sadly I'm inclined to agree with :P

Hi all,
I was playing local LAN game this evening with my friend, the game crashed, but what was the most frustrating was the fact that I could not load the autosave game, it said it could not find the save game, has this been encountered before ?

(I am running Vista 64 bit with only 2gb (cry) of memory 8800 GTX graphic card, 2 x 150 gb raided 10.000 hd X-FI elite sound card and ummhh.. 6600 quad core )

the other computer is XP vista 32 bit 2gb memory AMD 3500+ with 6600 GT graphic card

any ideas why this is not working ?
