Sins Beta 4 Technical Feedback - *POST HERE*

And so it begins....again.

This thread is for technical feedback for Sins of a Solar Empire Beta 4. 

Please reply to this post if you'd like to make: a bug report, let us know about a compatibility issue, graphics issues, performance reports, etc. (i.e., technical stuff).

Before making a report, please be aware that the minimum system requirements for Beta 4 are:

  • Windows XP SP2 / Vista
  • 1.8 GHz Processor
  • 512 MB RAM (1 GB RAM for Vista)
  • 128 MB 3D DirectX Video Card
  • DirectX 9.0c
  • LAN or Broadband Internet Connection for Multiplayer

IMPORTANT:  When making a post about a bug, be certain to include - your system specs, a description of the bug you encountered, what you were doing when the bug occurred (how to reproduce it), and if it was reproducible or not.  We won't be able to make changes to the game without detailed information.

If you encounter a crash, Sins should automatically generate a minidump file. Please send the generated exception and a DirectX diag report to support(at)ironcladgames(dot)com along with a detailed description as outlined above. Minidump files are located in (please note these directories are hidden by Windows):

XP: C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire
Vista: C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\

The no icons thing makes it very difficult to coordinate a battle, because it is impossible to tell where the enemy ships are unless they're being targeted.

also when you zoom out, the stars are randomly missing their "dust" cloud

Uhmmm... Is it just Me or is the Subverter Vasari Ship flying backwards?

The large fat end, with a big round engine port is at the head of the ship, and the smaller and downward pointing tail with windows is in the back.

The model should be flipped?

the subverter is meant to look like a leech. at least AFAIK
besides, it looks cool as is.

im getting a CTD when i start the game
i start the game the screen goes black then i get a little eror mesage saying "Failed to find file 'Beam_NotAdditive.fx' in either primary path or secondary path. subDir(PipelineEffect)" and then when i hit any of the skip or break buttons the game closes this happens every time i start the game

Schod, it looks backwards, but more importantly it doesn't look like it matches the other ships profile wise. The style is right, its just that most Vasari ships widen towards the back ... not thin.

At any rate:

Uhm, the Phase Gate reinforcement ability ended up putting me at -300 fleet supply and then never generated another ship???? If they continue to generate ships they should obey Rally points... and I now need a way to tell ALL Rally Points to go to ONE place, at Once.

Because 20 Planets with 20 Phase Gates... so many new ships...

@Schod: I notice that a lot of missiles fired from Vasari capitals especially don't all hit the target, it looks like they do the damage, but they fly around loops and then disappear.

Odd bug/AI behavior:

In a MP game I just played, I showed my ships to jump as a group to an ice planet from an asteroid. They flew upwards a considerable distance on the Z-axis at around the center of the grav well, and then jumped towards the ice. In the process, the group got scattered around all over the ice planet's grav well, a few ships ended up on a completely opposite side, and others were thrown about along one of the edges.

I emailed the replay to [email protected]. It's 41 minutes long and that weird jump happens a bit after 35 I believe.

The engines are the areas with squiggly designs on them, like all Vasari ships. They're on the back.



Anyway, it also seems that Subverters are getting the in-well jump ability without having to actually research it.

Just got a cultural message plus this afterwards: "Failed to find StringID: 'IDS_PLANETDETAILSINFOCARD_CULTURETAKEOVERSTATUS_ALMOSTLOST'. NOTE: Any following StringID failures will be supressed."

FIX this please devs, this is something that is so simple and yet SO irritating... why did it get put this way in the first place? AFAIK all the orbital bodies ahve been crunched, but this is excessive.

OK, I really think we need a way to switch hosts, and or drop players that are freezing the game. What I would really like is if we could have some dedicated servers for big games, as in every big game I've played, the game has frozen before we've had our big confrontation.

Some bugs I think is here.

1. I noticed fighters/bombers in system (from the systems bomberbays) follow tradeships
and others ships leaving system per hyperspace, even if the fighters/bombers do not
have hyperspace capability (unless this has been granted in Beta 4)
2. I have also noticed ships when I got the 'Highly Attuned Sensors' so I could see all
hyperspace trafic, that non-player ships jump or is enroute to non-existing
systems/planets and just disappear after a few minutes if not target is available.


Will keep this open (hopenfully) and updated for other bugs when I see them.

Yeah, I looked at it again, and the icons are missing only in the gravity wells that the other systems overlap. So I guess having sufficient distance between systems would make it go away.

Okey. Tested a little with some maps I made.

Made 2 random maps, with 1 and 3 stars : This resulted in the invisible units/structures for some reason. Tried the maps which the devs made that came with the game, and so no problems in the start of the game. Some anomolies as said above with stars to close to eachother when random generated.
Further I tested for those chasing bombers out of system, and those are still in effect, and somehow very frusterating when they use ages to return and leave their system unprotected.

Further info will come when I find some more 'anomoly' with the random direction some computer player ships which seem to go somewhere there is no planet or star just to vanish ( I think they do, since I have not seen them enter any system I've been in while I noticed this ).

Going to check with custom, non-random maps (when and if I get them to work which at the moment for some reason I don't, hehe ) and see if the above happens there too.

Researching the wave technologies of the Vasari breaks the game. The error message is
"Entity Ref not found: ꬸ^RESEARCHSUBJECT_WEAPONDAMAGE_WAVE1"

It cannot be skipped, as it will reappear unlimited times.

Hm... doesn't happen in my games.

Perhaps a reinstall will solve it?

Then it may be because I updated the game instead of deinstalling before installing a fresh one. Likely, as the culture missing string error also still pops up.

I got another error message that may and may not be fixed in the hotfix:
Particle Simulation Definition not found: SupportBuff_WeaponJam

I don't precisely what is causing it. But I would presume it is the Vasari cooldown increase structure, as I am currently attacking a Vasari colony with that present.

SHIFT key problems.

Shift key aint working for the black market, when pressed you cant buy or sell anything-

Also i seem to recall that the shift key was able to slow down the arrow key movement, but its not working anymore.

actually it only doesnt work if you cannot make the full threshold, IE sell 500 crystal/metal.

Likely, as the culture missing string error also still pops up.


There are still culture stream bugs -- for example, the one thats supposed to warn you your about to loose a planet doesn't show, instead it breaks the game.
