WHat are the fleet limits? LArgest fleet VS fleet engagement?

I cannot imagine more that 50 ships per side really. Is their more in an armada.
Whats the most capital ships anyone has had in a fleet?

LOL thats an image of beta 1

He did say he couldn't imagine a fleet larger then 50 ships

But as it is in beta 3 multiplayer, i see fleets around 4 caps and 100 frigats with a handful of cruisers

Don't forget each fighter/bomber is a completely autonomous unit - and there are usually hundreds of those. The engine can handle a ridiculous number of units (as even the unoptimized beta 1 showed) but we pulled it back for gameplay purposes. We will likely change the numbers again before release though I'm not sure if we are going for fewer units or more.

What-when-where-huh?!

Depends on the map size. I know already people are each fielding over a hundred units (not even counting fighter/bombers) on larger maps. Multiply this by 10 possible players + NPC + Pirates etc.

I generally hit 50 "per side" fairly easily even on smaller maps ATM -- once you upgrade your fleet points for a given planet, you can fit a lot of cobalts with just a few planets.

oh and I take it normally icons would be turned off at that range?

largest fleet i ever had was scraping all my ships into 1 fleet and having 235 of them, Maxed out the capital ships and i had alot of frigates, and cruisers. I had very little slow down on a medium map with just a single core, i can't wait until i get a dual core and really max it out on a large map, thats going to be fun!

Something that will piss me off, as well probably lots of other, will be hardcoded limits to things. There is nothing more frustrating then that, for example Conquest: Frontier Wars, has been coded such that you can't get more than 200points worth of units, even with a special patch. I understand all the limitations of the game, but it would be REALLY COOL if you made the limit in a .ini file, so that in 5 years when we are running oct-core CPUs and 16GB RAM, we can play SINS with thousands of ships each player, simply by changing that value... Or when you release the expansion pack, or mod kit, or whatever, include the ability to make a "super-unit" mod...

Cheers

I thought the Devs said that the game was only limited by your hardware and was futureproof for that sort of thing.

Well, currently the hard fleet point cap is 2000, which could get you 300 or more ships depending on your fleet composition. This cap can be increased for single player, but not multiplayer in the same way you suggest, modifying a file How it will be in release.. we will have to see There was a big thread pushing the idea that the hard cap should be increased and multiplayer games should be able to pick from a few options (low/medium/high) as is fairly commonplace in MP games these days.

And presumably the devs will get around to doing that.

And, worse come to worse, you'll be able to control the maximum unit level using a "Mod manager"... and eventually, you'll get a package of standard "mods" which increases that maximum cap to the limit most people feel appropriate. Or provides a scalar control thats going to be a pain in the rear, to control it. Who knows

I hear what you are saying, but you still don't get it. I don't care about what the cap is NOW (really), or whether or not there is an option to pick from different caps, multiplayer, I care only about the future. Even if they think that in 5 years time, the hardware could still only handle 20k points worth of ships, I'm STILL POINTING OUT THAT THEY SHOULDN'T BE SETTING IT IN CONCRETE LIKE THAT!! It only needs a simple max_cap = something; in an ini file, and we'll be happy.

I'm arguing 100% for there to not BE a 'hard' cap at all. I fully agree with the devs to put sensible limits in place for now, but it should be easily changable.

The fleet limit will be data driven (i.e, you can open a file in notepad and just increase the cap from 2000 to 10000000 if you like) - we just haven't got around to it yet, don't worry

*Multi starts looking for a 16core PC*
You mean, dual core 16 core pc, don't ya?
Oh really? It wont be limited by a short or long integer then?

Lol you want to see a large fleet!? This fleet was so large that the unit selector couldn't even select all of my ships! (And this is Beta 3)
