Is Sins a rock scissors paper game or can you use tactics?

Just after some confort that throwing hordes of huge economy built ships at the enemy is not a sure fire way to win

There is more in the way of strategy than tactics, but they did not go with a A > B > C > A system, if thats what your asking. There is usually more than one way to counter a given approach, and even if your using units against their counters (fighters against flak) they can still win -- it requires a fair bit of numbers, but nothing to overwhelming.

Then be comforted Numbers help as they do in any strategy game, but superior numbers can be beaten with inferior if the player is on the ball. As Ron mentioned, it leans more on strategy than tactics sometimes and how you approach a fight often makes more difference than what you do during the fight (strategy over tactics, basically), but there are definitely elements of both.

Actually if you use fighters against flaks, you need hundreds of fighters for some few flaks.

Although with bombers, that's a bit more likely.

But no, throwing hordes of ships at a human enemy will eventually get you killed, since she would probably either have overrun you before your economy is up, attacked your back while your ships where attacking in front or shred your ships to pieces with defenses and capitals.

Or something totally else.

That doesn't mean that Sins is balanced at the moment. It's not. But we aren't in the gameplay beta now, so expect lot's of tweaks in the next beta.

yeah, I guess I am still hung up on this being Homeworld3 with planets.
I take it there is not a great variety of ship types compared to Homeworld

For the only race that we're currently able to play, there are 6 frigate types (though one is your colony ship that isn't really a combat ship), 4 cruiser types, and 5 capital ships.

But no, this isn't Homeworld with planets.

??

hmm... it is very simaler to HW in alot of ways....

I think we need more ships. the number of unit types is rather small... i think we need more ships that overlap duties, but I sure more ships will be out with subsecuint betas.

hear hear, unit diversity can go a long way towards bettering a game.

*cough cough* Two more races on the way.

So, tell me, what is the collective term for both Bomber and Fighter squadrons based off a carrier?

Oh, fighters (Its a flawed terminology that, someday, someone will find a way to "fix" other than that mouthy locution "parasite craft")

What's wrong with strike craft or squadrons, or even wings?

Nothing except I don't use 'em

They all sound rather weird. Strike craft works, but squadrons / wings is a little weird.

For those expecting another Homeworld.. Forget it. It ain't gonna happen with this game. This game is in a class by itself even in its beta state. If you expect it to be like any other game you will just be disappointed. While it is similar in some ways to Homeworld, it is not the same. As Ron said this game focus's more on strategy than tactics. How you prepare for a battle, and how you execute. A real time game of chess so to speak (but not near as boring as chess). There are many ways to win, or lose, and more coming when the final game is released (with the Advent, and Vasari).

doesnt mean we cannot have more ships per race. frankly its down to almost one form of fleet composition, which is minorly irritating.

There won't be more ships per race than what you've got now. Some of the existing ships are getting additional abilities (via research) added to them, however.
