Why do we have to port foward?

Ok firstly , Im no expert, thus my thread is the form a ?. secondly , I have a router im not allowed to access

but heres whats strange.

Games such as Supreme Commander and StarWars:Empire at War , I am able to host using the router without port fowarding.

Games such as Homeworld 2 , TA Spring , Gamespy(total annihilation) i am only able to host once I have port fowarded.

Sins seems to be with the latter group.

But is there any way it could be like the former group?

I'd imagine the those in the former group use the server as a middleman for the hosting. While with Sins and others in the latter group, the hosting player is actually hosting and as such needs to be able to take incoming connections from the other players.

The server method may seem nicer, but it also takes a lot more hardware on the server end (it's not cheap).

Actually strange that you don't need to port forward with SupCom, that is a P2P game as well, and normally throws a wobbly if it even sniffs a firewall!
