Strategic importance of each resource?

Credit ,Metal and Crystals , what is the strategic importance of each. Lets say you have good crystal production but not very good metal production , what can you gear your building strategy towards which favors higher metal use? Stuff like that. Bear in mind that using the blackmarket to exchange should(?) be less appealing then just spending your stuff appropriately.

Atm , im only noticing a few things
- Cobalts dont cost Crystals
- Research Stations cost quite a bit of crystals.
- Caps dont cost much Crystals and Metal compared to Credits.

Actually, I don't really pay attention to resource usage and amount, but for me it's something like this:

- lots of credits => build more capital ships
- lots of metals => more Cobalts
- lots of crystal => more research

not enough of anything?

attack the enemy to get more colonies

The ships with more abilities cost more crystal. Just look at the Hoshiko and Cielo. Although, we've all seen how well the AI's fleets of those classes work
