SkinStudio 6 Beta Feedback

SkinStudio 6 Beta Feedback

Please post general feedback about SkinStudio 6 here.

You must have WindowBlinds 6 beta installed to use SKS6, but any skins made with it should work with WindowBlinds 5 as well.

This is a beta so you should expect missing sections and bugs.  If you find SKS is missing support for a specific section, please let us know!

If you are working on a new skin it would be best to ensure it is backed up before using SKS6.  Remember in this beta all changes are saved instantly!

You bring up a good point. I should have stated that though I am with Stardock I do not make the offical policy on these matters. So in the end I was just attempting to shed light on the logic behind the idea. I have however forwarded this to thoes that do make these calls.

@Stardock guys

PLLLLLLEASE dear stardock guys - could you please get your act together when udpating beta skinstudio or wb6. Latest Version of skinstudio 5.95 b0012 installs again abou 20MB in another directoy as did anterior version. hen deleting folder of earlier version I get an error about having to install wb6

I am talking about c:\Documents and ....\allusers\stardock - there is one folder now called skinstudio and one called skinstudio6. I NEVER had another version of sks installed than the beta 6 versions.

Thats not tolerable, first forcing us to use that crappy stardock desktop brwoser with its IE stuff and than not being able to use the same folders your app installed before.

PLEASE correct that ASAP - its still my computer and I DECIDE where I install stuff on it

Wow. Do you ask for everything in such a very rude way?

They are a company that thrives on the success of their product. All of their products.

Either you like what they are giving you or they will listen to constructive criticism and fix as per the public demand. This doesn't mean you have the right to be rude or demand anything.

You do have a choice on what goes into your computer. You also choose how to act. Right now you are acting like you DON'T want help.

Not only rude.... he has copied this gripe in a post of it's own

If you can't see it after pointing it out a debate would be useless. Never the less...

You do not dictate how they do business. You are not asking anymore, you were at first now you are demanding. The last part is a threat, worded strange but still a threat.

I'm not interested in debating this with you so please don't put up some large page explaining yourself or justifying it. I'm certain that public opinion is on my side. Thus if you think we are all wrong please don't post anything PUBLICLY anymore.

I was looking for a suggestions thread but didn't seem to be able to find one (maybe a stickyed one like this thread would be a good idea, hint hint) so I'll post my suggestion/question here...

First off let me say I am 'mostly' pleased with SKS6 so far...

Back before per-pixel frames a skinner was able to create animated and 'other' titlebar buttons. We can still do so on those same non-per-pixel frames but not on the new per-pixel ones. Are there any plans (or can there be) to implement animated titlebar buttons and/or 'other' buttons into the new per-pixel frames? By 'other' I mean buttons like rollup or open an application and the like. These simple things allowed for much more flexibility in making a unique skin and it is missed by much more then myself (I have spoken with other skinners about this, including other master skinners).

Neil:

I found what appears to be a bug in SKS6 (5.95[b].012 in SDC)

While working on the Horizontal taskbar, I was setting vertical painting margins. My taskbar is 28 pixels high. I had set the top margin at 25 and was bumping up the bottom margin so as to leave a 1 pixel 'gap' between the two and got click happy giving an extra click causing the top and bottom margins to 'overlap'.

SkinStudio6 immediately locked up and in checking Task Manager saw the the memory usage jumped up to the range of 40,000k with CPU usage about 99%. Since SKS6 wouldn't respond, I killed the task and restarted SKS6. Everything seemed ok until I reopened the Horizontal taskbar properties again and got another lockup.

I eventually opened the skin in SKS5 (5.01.049) and corrected the margin settings for no overlap. The skin then acted properly in SKS6.

As I recall, if you increased one margin in SKS5 too much, the opposing margin would automatically decrease so as not to have overlapping margins. SKS6 doesn't seem to do this and doesn't react well when it happens.

Oh, and in case it is relevant to my previous post, I'm running XP Pro SP2

Is there a working version of Skin Studio for Vista anywhere at the moment?

Both Current versions of SKS work in Vista.

Just tried to open SKS6, getting message about it has expired, and to update to the final release from with SDC, no update in SDC; I am an Object Desktop subscriber, subby good until Nov 2008.

My messages says WB6 beta needs to be installed
Reply #120 Top
Yeah, I'm getting that same message... would be nice to get this fixed....

I actually got an update to SKS6beta after a few attempts to use it (on Vista, SP1 RC) - but after the install, a new message came up saying that I needed to have WindowBlinds 6.01beta installed (which I obviously have). So I tried another uninstall and reinstall of SKS6beta, but it's back to the 10/19 build with the "Please update to the final release ..." error message at SKS startup. Anyone got a lead on what's going on yet? Oh, and btw, Happy 2008!!!

Same here.
Posted about it outside of this thread.

Have to say, without feeling too much of a whiner about it....as a relatively new customer to Stardock products, the lack of support and documentation with software leaves much to be desired.

Stardock is on Holiday break. Things like this are not that common, I'm sure it will be 'rectified' as soon as possible.

My first suggestion will be to wait till stardock returns from Holiday break on the 2nd, at the latest. There could be many reasons why this occured.

This really works. Thanks! In guess we'll have to wait till everybody gets back to work on the 2nd for a real fix on the issue.

Happy New Year Everyone!!
