AFAIK, there's no way for us to adjust the counter's refresh rate. It's just a javascript thing from what I'm told.

Actually, since it's in an external file (I requested the web devs to put it in one for just this purpose, by the way), you could just use adblock and block that specific file only. I had to do that myself, as having fifty instances of the counter running at once was bringing my browser to its knees and making it very painful to do the roundups.
