Alien vs. Cylon?
Please!

The graphics look 5 years old, and the story line even older.
Like a grade school kids game.

...time to buy it, me thinks not!

As a big fan of the old X-Com Defense game I am also curious about this game's release. The only thing that concerns me is that the release date, if I'm not mistaken has been pushed back several times, and the game itself has been in development for quite some time. I think the game is being developed by a smaller company, so possibly the resources they have at their disposal may be a determining factor in it's eventual release, or it may have to do with distribution and/or legal "red tape".
Let's cheer for the smaller game developer and hope they give us a true successor to the champion of all games, IMHO.
I would hope that they could improve on the old classic (better AI for one...) without destroying the soul of the original. If it turns out to be just a clone with nicer graphics, I think I will pass and then fondly remember a game that pleasantly consumed so many hours of my life back then (it even beat out Sid's Civ.I at the time for hours played).
I guess we'll just have to wait and read the reviews as they come in.

Cheers!

looks like a decent game, goin to wait for the reviews, i just wish they would make a good updated version of the UFO:Defense and make it compatible with Windows instead of using outside programs to run the game.

...there are plenty of mods already within the official forums that make up for the lack of keyboard control.

The UFO : Afterx series is quite a good successor imho.

Take2 bought the rights to the X Com IP though, which leads me to suspect that we might see a new UFO game before too long.

And for those of you with Steam, Terror From The Deep is now available for a couple of dollars.

Gamespot now has a review of it:

Doesn't look too appealing if you go by this review. Has anyone tried Alien Invasion, which vimes2004 just linked to? I HAVE to play some sort of X-Com clone, as I missed it the first time around and have heard nothing but good things about it. Maybe I'll have to give in and just go for Terror From the Deep, though that looks like it could be extremely frustrating because it's so much more difficult than UFO Defense.

Well, they didn't waste any time getting that revue out! Judging by their revue, it seems that my worst fears about them creating a "second class" X-Com game have in part been realized.

Oh well, as one player who reviewed the game stated... "it's up to the modding community now to set things right" (or words to that effect).

Too bad... I had high hopes for this one.

Thanks for the link CornhuskerMac.

Well I have been playing the game now for a few days and it is simply phenomenally good, even more so with the one particular mod that I am using...

There are warts with the game, tell me one where there aren't, and my first impressions were not that good. However continuing with the campaign I am amazed how 'just one more turn' type of compelling nature it has with its gameplay. Even more so when using the above noted mod.

Maybe the reviewer was unlucky as I have NEVER had one CTD whilst running the game, still I haven't always agreed with reviews from Gamespot. Just consider balancing that review along with the one that I linked to as well.

I am glad that posters in their forum seem to have a better opinion of the game...

Also it is the best selling game at the moment, at least noted here from Gamersgate...

..I just hope that those who bought it are happy

Wow, that mod seems to address just about everything that I was worried about after I read the Gamespot review. And just the fact that so much can be modded is a great sign. I'm definitely going to be rethinking whether to try this.

I'm a little worried about performance, or if it will even run. I have a year-old laptop that was rather low-end when new. I can run GCII DA, but later in the game on larger maps I get some serious lag and even some crashes or freezes. Sorry to have brought this up, as I probably just should have read the tech specs instead, but I don't trust them that much these days.

For anyone who's played UFO: ETs, any advice about what sort of system you really need to run it?

If you can run GC II, esp DA, then you should have no trouble at all in running this game.

It is a pity that even though it was in development for such a long time that it hasn't been as 'polished' as it could have been, a bit of a rough diamond really.

At least it seems that so much can be modified and, more importantly, there are many people willing to do it.

Whilst the game will not suit everyone for those that have fond memories of X-Com it will not let you down - or at least it didn't for me. Although for some who did like X-com I'm sure that nothing will ever come close...

I just tried it, and apparently you can't download it in the US yet. Must not be officially out here? Oh well, I can wait.

Looking at the UFO: ET forum has convinced me to try the game. It looks like 1) people are modding this quite well already, and 2) the devs are working on an official patch.

About the Gamespot review, most at the forum thought it was too harsh. But there were a few who noted that the score isn't totally unfair given how many problems there are with the officially released version.

Gamersgate (the shop linked to above) only has the license to distribute it in europe, matrix games is the north american distributor and you can get it here

Thanks Talios! Unfortunately, it's listed at $10 more than the other site, but that looks like the standard US price.

Oddly, I did a google search to try to find how to download it in the US, and that site didn't come up on the first couple of pages. They need a new strategy.

Terror from the Deep was pretty crappy IMO. The missions were too frikin long!
