Custom Ships

For End Game

Ok, first and foremost, let me say that so far I've found the beta incredibly fun (Despite that little no-fun rule) and really couldn't ask for more from a phase 1 beta. That said, this is not something I want implemented anytime soon, possibly in a late beta or something just before release, but it is something I think will make the game more enjoyable in endgame and hey, perhaps they already have something like it in there.

As the title suggests, I would like a few custom ships in the game. Even if it's just one capital ship which you can call your own. It wouldn't be overpowered or something but just a ship someone can make to their own playing style. Such as a heavily defended ship, but little towards damage, for a defensive player or a ship with the health of a frigate, but which can take out an army of frigates with it's firepower. These are just two examples and I'm sure people can come up with much more interesting types of ships.

It could be implemented by simply giving the us a ship editor with the final release and letting us choose from various base hulls and add weapons, shiels etc. Each of these would add a new graphic to the ship and so on. There could even be other items just there to make it look better, like in GalCiv2. The ship editor could work just like GalCiv2, giving you a certain amount of space on the hull and allowing you to put whatever you want on it as long as it doesn't exceed the space cap. Ofcourse the price of the ship would be scaled according to what was put on it as to stop people from making ships that are too powerfull for it's cost, which I'm sure some of us could do. Along with this we would also be able to add 4 special abilities to the ship, we could possibly be allowed to add one multiple times to make it more powerfull, such as a guass cannon, which will fire two rounds per cooldown and antimatter cost, if selected two times etc. This would obviously increase the overall price of the ship even more as a single ability of 4 times the strenght or duration that the 'normal' version could most possibly be much stronger than a ship with 4 'normal' version abilities.

This is just my view on a feature I would like to be in the game and I would appreciate everyone else's thoughts on it.

P.S. I do realize I could just go play a game like GalCiv2 for this feature, but I would really like this game to have it and would appreciate if people didn't post just to tell me to go play GalCiv 2 or Space Emires IV or something if I want this feature in gameplay.

Definately something worth considering for a future build but if you want to try this right now in the beta it is possible. The modding trailblazers have already done it and its pretty easy to do even without dev help or our official Forge Tools (to be released much later). These guys are easiest to track down in the sins irc channel (irc.stardock.com #sins) though they have been known to make a few posts in these forums (some before the modding thread so they might be a bit tougher to find).

I don't have a full listing of all the special ship they've built but I know one modder created a suped up carrier with changes to his abilities (he put on all fighter oriented abilities) and increased the fighter carrying capacity to something like 300.

Another created a special variant of the Kol Battleship with beam weapons on all banks, increased armor and hull points and various other bonuses.

Sounds interesting definately something worth looking at. I didn't mean a mod though, just a custom ship slot where everyone could have a unique ship, thats not overpowered, thats unique to their playing style. I will defenately look at the modding aspect of the game and I am pleased that you would consider my idea for a future build. I was probably a bit too enthusiatic to suggest an idea like this could be implemented before launch. It would be nice to see this in the game at some later stage though.
