Antivirus

This isn't really PC 'gaming', but I couldn't find a better section to put this under.

My subscription to Norton is reaching an end, and I was looking for an alternative antivirus program, since I'm pretty sure that Norton screws up SDC, along with other things. Does anybody have any suggestions for good antivirus software that doesn't screw up your computer just as much as the virus it's supposed to be protecting me from?

Depends on if you want to pay or not. And if so how much.

I currently use NOD32 antivirus and I am happy with it. Avast should also be good, but thats what other people say, I personally have not used it.

There are lots of others to pick from. Try typing the ones that I mentioned, especially the first one and try out the trial.
If you don't like it, then good luck in your search

I use it, and have never had a single problem with it. It does its job, and takes good care of me, for free. Forget Norton, it's a mess.

I use AVG as well, no problems, and almost daily updates.

Pretty much anything but Norton and Macaffee.

Running AVG Free, three processes currently taking up less than 2 MB of memory.

BTW, AVG is now offering a free anti-spyware program as well.

KidGloves, what does AVG get in the way of?

I highly recommend AVG free... i have also heard that avast is good, but it sometimes gets in the way of things (specifically my friend was running an FTP and periodically after avast had updated itself it would shutdown the FTP progs access rights until he realized what was going on and reset it)

definitely don't have to go the paying route, and in some cases *coughMcCafeecoughNortoncough* the paying route is worse... the only thing you get is extra system tools, which you can also find free versions of

anti-virus: AVG or Avast
Anti-Spyware: Spybot S&D or AVG
System cleaners: AusLogics Disk Defrag & TweakNow RegCleaner standard

all of these are either free or have free versions which operate well enough that you shouldn't be concerned about your system health

I am not sure why people are having problems with Norton. I have used it for years and because of its deeper level installation they(viruses) cannot crack it so easily but it does its job great. I now have the 2007 edition and it seems extremely firm and fit. Not only does it not interfere with any program I use like games (and I use a lot of them) but it seems to be making a ground breaking speed up of its own internal operation. ie. It loads like wild fire now with 2007.

I have tried the others like the free avg and panda but they do pretty much the same thing with regards to slowing down the system while things are attempting to run. Just remember "ALL" antivirus software is ment to "Watch" what eveything else is being done on your system therefore they will slow things down a bit in order to be complete. This means that the more intense the slowing the more intense the watching in the case of Norton.

Good luck and remember also that you get what you pay for in some things and antivirus software is one of them. (free is not necessarily better).

I have always used Norton's since its earliest times on the PC. Works for me, never had any long standing issues with it, and its current incarnation of almost "fire and forget" when using it is excellent. Its par for the course these days to knock the top products almost because they are there, but whatever way you come at it, you cant knock Symantec's standing in the anti-v world. You can even download their individual virus fixes for free even if you are not a subscriber, and Corporates have tens of millions of licences for it - the latter is not cost driven, its quality driven, they cant afford to use cut price anti-v and risk cash laden data loses.

Many times Nortons has done its stuff for me and stopped an incoming virus from nearly all incoming directions, a couple of times picked up a dorment trojen when it first went live and tried to communicate out onto the internet. The only time I have had real issues with it, have resulted from bad programming practices by other Companies trying to short cut things - Nortons plays it by the book, and no amount of garbage spoken by the offending Company can hide the fact they were "caught with their hands in the till" and should go back to best pratices for programming.

At the end of the day people will use what they are comfortable with, but that decision should not be based on a small voluable minority posting on Bullitin boards/Forums creating an apparent wave of hassle. The vast majority of Norton users are well happy and dont bother posting, why should they, therefore critical comment can be taken out of all proportion to a problem.

Regards
Zy

For me, it's the opposite.

Avast! has stopped viruses time and time again.

The only virus I ever had, one that caused me to completely wipe my harddrive and start from scratch . . . was all thanks to Norton.

For me, free is better. I'll never pay Norton a dime again.

Slightly mixed signals here, but then what do you expect?

Thanks for the help.

I gave up on Norton years ago and then went to Trend (PCcillin) and was very happy for a couple of years, it worked well and was not a resource hog, but read a lot of bad reviews for 2007 ver., some calling it bloatware now. I then found CA Security Suite (antivirus, antispam, firewall, etc.) and all the reviews seemed positive...so I purchased it last month and can say it requires very little in the way of resources to run, runs in the background with very few alerts...I'm very happy with the choice.

currently I am using   “Optimodefender Antivirus Software”. I am facing no any problem with this antivirus software.

I just use Microsoft Security Essentials with Windows 7 and I have never had any issues or any viruses.

AVG and no problems for me.

I've used Avast and AVG with no problems.

I dislike avg. It has false positives and it also messes with visual studio, causing it to run slow. I think i will just use microsoft security essentials going forward. Have not seen any viruses in years, so not worried about it too much.

I've had excellent reliability, great updates, great blocking of attacks, easily removed viruses, etc. with Kaspersky. For spyware I use SpyHunter which seems to catch everything, but not as it's being added. I'm referring to cookies and the like. I'd highly suggest them both, and if just one Kaspersky.

MS security essentials woks fine for me.

AVG stopping being good a long time ago [post version 9], once they decided to become a bundle app.
Avast is decent, though it might be a bit "talky" for some people
I really like Unthreat Anti-Virus, except their Free version randomly updates to the Premium Trial and expires [~3-4 months].  Good news is that you can reinstall the free version, but that's a real hassle for some people.

What I do recommend 100% is to PURCHASE Malwarebytes PRO.  It's a one-time purchase and never expires.  Can usually be found on sale online for ~$20.

I have used Norton in many of its different forms over the last few decades and am currently using Norton 360 for 2014. I also tried switching to PcCilllin and learned an important lesson. You have to be very careful when switching from one anti-virus program to another. You must remove the old one completely before installing the new one, and some of them require special steps to be run to complete the removal. Failure to do a complete removal can result in conflicts between the old one and the new that can slow your PC down drastically.

Another thing I have learned is that some things I would consider a virus some anti-virus programs do not, such as "adware" and "browser hijackers". These often come with some of the freeware that is available, and one of the ways they pay for the cost of that freeware is by putting  advertising on your PC. Since this is not a direct attack on your PC or an attempt to get secure information about you, they are often not considered viruses, but they can drastically slow your PC down.  If your PC is slow you may want to get the free version of "Malwarebytes" and have it examine your PC for these.

WARNING no. 1: If you are already using an antivirus program, do not bother with Malwarebytes PRO, It will conflict with some antivirus programs.

WARNING no. 2: Do not set Malwarebytes to run automatically and concurently with another anti-virus program. They will get into each others way.

WARNING no. 3: Make sure you understand what Malwarebytes is telling you before taking the action it recommends on adware and browser hijackers. Do a search on the web first.

And, as you have undoubtedly heard before, be very wary of freeware that you haven't researched for complaints about. This seems to be particularly true of free games.

Jack, Malwarebytes Pro got a major upgrade recently.  A number of the issues you describe no longer apply

Good, but I still think it is a bad idea to have two or more antivirus programs running simultaneously,

Malwarebytes isn't an Anti-Virus, it's Anti-Malware, which is okay to run multiples of (not that I'd want to).  You are correct that running multiple A/V is not a good thing.  Though I occasionally recommend keeping an on demand cloud-based A/V installed as a backup to their regular app.

Kaspersky is probably best. But it is resource hog as far as I remember.

Currently using F-secure and I am happy with it.
