YouTube, Air Guitaring and Rage

My JU Assignment

I never been a computer guy. Not that I have anything against computers. I never thought they were some kind of fad that was going to be replace by something better ( I'm not a disgrunted former Betamax owner or anything like that).

The closest I ever got to owning a computer was when I bought a webtv a while back. Okay, so it wasn't close at all. But it still provided what i wanted it for - To e-mail family and friends, read newspapers and most importantly, to enter sports fantasy leagues ( I hope no one thought I was going to say something abouting watching porn).

Now I have a real computer. An actual computer, folks. I can now see all kinds of different sites I never could with webtv, and on a monitor instead of my 19" RCA ( Although it was pretty cool when I did hook it up to my 42" TV).

Having a computer I can do so much more now, so what did I do when I got my computer? What new wonderful things did this computer novice do? Why of course, I e-mail family and friends, read newspapers and entered sports fantasy leagues (I hope this time you weren't thinking I was going to mention porn).

Even though family and friends have told me about numerous sites to go to I never was really interested in them. I have ordered things from online like from ebay, Amazon and Ticketmaster, but places like YouTube or MySpace were places I thought would be totally boring. Well, that's until I actually visited the sites. Now I'm sad to say I'm addicted to them. Maybe not addicted that might be too strong a word. It just seems lately I go to YouTube, and before you know it, I been there a few hours (Okay, addicted IS the right word).

You can see so much there. From news clips, bloopers, speeches, the best sports highlights, concert footage, videos, your favorite movie or TV scenes, and just about anything else. The latest clips I been seeing alot of have been music performances. I love seeing all my old faves. Did anyone think I was going to say porn that time? NO WAY, plus YouTube doesn't show hardcore porn ( I already checked .. err .. um.. I mean I heard it doesn't somewhere).

Some of the performances I have seen have been The White Stripes, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimi Hendrix, Rage Against The Machine and Ten Years After. I played the White Stripes, Stevie, Jimi and Ten Years After a second time. Why a second time? So I could get on my feet and play air guitar. I'm sure every guy out there has one time or another played air guitar. It doesn't even matter what kind of song. It only has to have a solid guitar riff and someone out there has played air guitar to it.

I'm no singer. I have a terrible voice, but when I'm in the shower, to me, I'm the greatest rock, r&b, rap, country and pop singer ever, and the same goes for air guitar playing. I can't play a guitar to save my life, but when the house is empty and the stereo is pumping I'm an air guitar god.

My mini concert consisted of The White Stripes' Grammy performance, Jimi's Johnny B. Goode, Ten Years After's Woodstock performance (which I think was the best of the concert), my favorite Rage song and Stevie doing my favorite song of his. Afterwards, I was a sweaty mess. I'm just glad no one saw or heard me. I'm even more glad no one taped me. The last thing I need is to be on YouTube singing Killing In The Name Of by Rage Against The Machine.

Speaking of Rage, I was reading on Google news Monday and saw an article about this year's line-up for Coachella Arts and Music Festival. It's an concert they have every year in Indio, California. It's usually a 2 day event with 20 to 30 bands playing each day. This year it's going to be a 3 day event. Bjork is headlining day 1, the Red Hot Chili Peppers day 2, and the headliner for day 3 will be Rage Against The Machine. Yes, one of my favorite bands are getting back together for the show.

That's the good news. The bad news is it's only a one time thing. And now the worse news, my family is coming to visit me the same week as the concert. Plus there's a big family event around the same time so i won't be attending the show. I really love my family, and I miss them immensely, but we're talking Rage here, and I mean that in more than one way. I haven't been this disappointed since I found out YouTube doesn't show porn (I know what i said earlier give me a break I'm a guy).

Hey Chris,

I don't play air guitar because, well, I can play guitar, so I don't really see the point. Having said that, when I was a teenager and completely hooked on Kiss, my brother and a couple of friends made wooden replicas of guitars so we could jump around pretending we were Gene, Paul, Ace or Peter (yeah, I know, Peter Criss was the drummer, but how much fun is it sitting watching your friends jump around and having to pretend you're playing the drums - not much, I can tell you.)

As for MySpace, I wasn't particualarly a fan either but we (the band) found a lot of others had profiles and were using it to network with, so we now have our own profile. Check it out at www.myspace.com/jcronikal

Oh yeah, I haven't got the disc in the mail to you yet, but will do very shortly.

OK your 'airiness'! I agree, this was fun to read! I really miss your writing!

I happened to listen to the Red Hot Chilli Peppers in concert on tv the other day, not bad... I think I like them!

awww too bad about the concert and the family clash, maybe you can take them with you?! I know, they're probably not a fan(atic!) like you!!

Now about that porn thing......!

Chris, did you know that the Aussies have invented an Air Guitar shirt? Might want to get Dynamaso to ship you one.

Me neither. To me they're just toys to "dink" around with. We have them at work and I can's see how they really help a thing. Seems they create a vast amount of paper, WAY more then they save. Oh well...

And I'm a Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughn fan too! How come all my favorite rockers like these two, Randy Rhodes, Bon Scott, Kurt Cobain, Janis Joplin, etc. are all dead? Sigh...

(interesting blog too!)

I need to pick up a guitar. I could be a late bloomer. Funny line about an air drummer.

I already have visited it a few times. As soon as I get my own account I plan on adding you on my page.

No problem. I'm going to download the 3 you have on triple j unearthed and add them to Rose's Zune. That may hold me over until then.

Thanks so much. I had trouble adding the links all on one page, though. Oh well I'm just happy I could link at all.

Donna,

OK your 'airiness'! I agree, this was fun to read! I really miss your writing!

Thank you. I have ideas to write, but never get around to actually doing it. I'm not 'airness' I'm 'laziness'.

I happened to listen to the Red Hot Chilli Peppers in concert on tv the other day, not bad... I think I like them!

Did you play air guitar??

Doc,

Chris, did you know that the Aussies have invented an Air Guitar shirt? Might want to get Dynamaso to ship you one.

He's already sending me a CD. It might be asking too much for a shirt, too. Wasn't there a pic of it somewhere? I'm thinking I saw one, but again my memory isn't so good. Hope it wasn't the drugs.

Shovel,

And I'm a Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughn fan too! How come all my favorite rockers like these two, Randy Rhodes, Bon Scott, Kurt Cobain, Janis Joplin, etc. are all dead? Sigh...

Some of my favorites, too. I get very selfish when I think of all the great music they still had in them I won't be able to hear. I did get to see most of them in concert. Of course, I didn't get to see Jimi or Janis, and I thought I would have a chance to see Kurt but....

I wonder sometimes if Jimi were alive if he would be a strictly blues player. Or what kind of classical rock music Randy Rhodes would have played. Or how big AC/DC would be right now if Bon Scott were alive.

(interesting blog too!)

Thanks, Shovel.

Yes, it was on CNN about 2 months ago. And it was not the drugs (antihistamine? )

I am digging the new computer, too. I have some new favorite sites as well...one in particular that has become a semi-addicting hobby of mine. Maybe I'll write about that in the near future...lol.

Glad you decided to write, honey. And you are kidding about the porn...right?...right?!?!

It's funny you say this, because I like to "air drum" on occasion...lol. And it's fun for me.

Oh, and I "air piano play " as well...I used to play piano (during high school and college) , but it's been so long that when I try to do so now, I am soooo rusty.

Chris,

You should at least give it a go, if you're interested in playing. Life's too short and all that. I could give you some pointers, if you'd like. If it weren't for guitar, I don't know what I'd be doing. It was my only real point of solice as a angsty teenager.

As soon as I get my own account I plan on adding you on my page

Cool... Let me know when you do and I'll come check it out.

I'm going to download the 3 you have on triple j unearthed and add them to Rose's Zune. That may hold me over until then.

Excellent. If you register on the Unearthed site, you could give us a review too. We've slipped a bit on the charts (not that we've been chart orientated anyway) so any extra reviews always help.

Of course I don't mind sending you one, although I've not heard about this but I'll see what I can find out. Stay tuned, mate.

Rose,

I like to "air drum" on occasion

Cool... My brother, who is a real drummer, used to do it until he realised how much fun it was playing air guitar instead. But air piano is a new one to me.

Me too, me too! My band (read: me) is on there too!

air piano is a new one to me.

When you hear one of those blistering keyboard solos, you just have to pretend to play along.

Hey! For you, they will give a demo model.

Hey Doc, thanks for the link. I remember hearing something about this a while ago but haven't heard anything since. I bet it is costly too, but I will at least try and find out. Stay tuned.

As far as you know I'm completely kidding.

I should give it a go. I have a few songs floating around in my head.

If it weren't for guitar, I don't know what I'd be doing. It was my only real point of solice as a angsty teenager

My solice was sports. Though my best friend and I used to write songs. He wanted us to be like Lennon and McCartney or Jagger and Richards. If my words were anything near anybody's they were more Morrissey and Marr. (If any Smiths fans are reading this I'm not comparing myself to their talent so chill out )

Cool... Let me know when you do and I'll come check it out.

Both Rose and I need to stop being lazy and get a Space already.

I plan on it. I showed the site to a few people already. Well, not the whole site just your songs. Rose's brother was very impressed. He couldn't believe you were Australian.

San Cho,
Me too, me too! My band (read: me) is on there too!

I wonder if they would take air money.

Chris,

Hey, I can put music to virtually anything. Maybe we could start an international writing partnership. Whaddaya think?

Rose's brother was very impressed. He couldn't believe you were Australian.

Excellent, mate. I'm pleased to hear he liked our stuff. I'm really keen to hear his too. Does he have a MySpace site? If not, he should try and get one. I also appreciate you spreading the good word as far as the Unearthed site goes, mate. Thanks very much, you're a bloody legend.
