Just A Desktop Screenshot

I've been using SuSE since v 8.0.

I had grown very accustom to the KDE interface, and decided one day to try the GNOME front end. It lasted less than a week.

Maybe I'll give it another shot someday, but I found it quite awkward. Not because of the interface itself, but because of what I was used to.

What advantages are you finding?

I use Slackware. I have KDE, Gnome, Fluxbox (my favorite), and XFCE4 which I can switch back and forth on at will. I prefer the speed of Fluxbox, but also enjoy playing with the KDE and Gnome eye candy.

Gnome isn't bad once you get used to it and set it up to work the way you want. The first thing I always do is get rid of the double click crap. I like a single click to activate items. It's easy enough to change.

I don't think there are any real advantages of Gnome over KDE or visa versa, they're just something different. They're both resource hogs to a certain extent (eye candy isn't free). Gnome is a tad worse in that respect, using slightly more memory. I do like the fact that Gnome applies config settings changes immediately instead of waiting for you to click apply. Just saves a step.

Six of one, half a dozen of the other. I've always thought of KDE as being more like a Windows DE and Gnome being more like a MAC DE.

There's a program on my systems that spits out some quote or other whenever you access the command line, either through a terminal window or directly in the CLI run level.

I used KDE before but since installing Ubuntu I actually prefer the default Gnome interface. I like the clean default look.

They're both ok. KDE is by far more easily customized, but they're both resource hogs in my opinion.

I've played around with Ubuntu a bit but still prefer good old Slackware.

Yeah, I suppose that's the role for which she is best known. She does photograph well.

Reply #12 I'm all about the Enlightenment DE

I played around with Enlightenment a while back but haven't done much with it in a long time. I really wasn't all that impressed with it at the time. Maybe I'll install it again and play around with it some more.

I've been playing around with Enlightenment DR16. They've definitely made some improvements over the last time I tried it. Not too shabby.
