Lucky Jack, it has nothing to do with Brad. Nobody need ask. Period. Stardock provides tools, if someone creates a mod that violates a copyright THEY are responsible unless stardock has an official position.
Amen, Case closed, so on and so forth. Stardock is NOT
creating it, and if they don't host the files, then it shouldn't be an issue. Brad cannot control what other people come up with and it would be precendent setting and assinine to hold them responsible. You say ask first, but think for a minute, I can mod to my hearts content in the privacy of my basement and Brad would never know. How on EARTH could he be responsible for some copyright violation of something I cooked up?
Thnk about it.

RastaKyle,

The case is moot. Read post #19. Nakor talked directly to Brad. The libraries belong to Stardock. They are going to review anything sent up to the libraries before it gets made available to us.

Passing stuff directly between users fits your arguement and I see no problem with it. But throughout the discussion in this thread it was not clear whether use of the library was being thought of for passing the mods around, but since the libraries *would* be the easiest way the issue of using them had to be addressed.

The use of a tool by a purchaser that has total control of the tool fits your arguement well, and I acknowledge it. But the library is a tool that belongs to Stardock and the implications are much different.

Also, don't forget. Games played with user mods not on the Galciv library will not be eligible for recording on the Metaverse.

Well, all I would want of a star trek mod is new races and new ship designs, that would be find for me and there should be no problem with metaverse then...

Lucky Jack, got ya. Yes, I perhaps misunderstood. If it goes in the galciv library then it would indeed have to
be unencumbered by copyright. I thought we were purely discussing user mods. At any rate, a star trek mod would be pretty cool. I've been watching the old star trek series on dvd...remastered 5.1. Brings back memories of my youth in the 60's (I mean 7 and 8 yrs old type youth!).

I don't think copyright holders will bother on a bunch of guys giving away a ST mod for GalCiv, at least no more than for SE4 ;) ...
Indeed Stardock should NOT host it. We only need an independent community fansite to put all of it onto - discussions included ! :)

As for copyrighted art, you only have to change/recolor some pixels to void all claims lol

*sigh*

Why must every space game be modded into a Star Trek game?

Silly Trekkers! Can't you just enjoy a game for what it was intended to be without modding it into Star Trek? ;-)

*NOTE: However, I respect your desire to do so!*

Sincerely,
Yak

Yes.. a star trek mod would be totally awsome... i would even pay for it.. well if it was good enough. I would so help out... I hope GalCiv will be nice and modable.

Teams:
1-Federation
2-Romulan
3-Klingon
4-Ferenghi
5-Cardassian
6-Borg or Dominion... (I would pick Borg, unless there is a way to mod in Tetracell White)

Theres so many minor races that could be renamed...

little OT here, but does anyone know anything about the real BOTF2? About a year ago or so, there was info that it was in the works, but a little after that, it disapeared from the internet... i love that game. :)

Considering that the original developer of Birth of the Federation (Microprose) no longer exists, it's parent company (Hasbro Interactive) no longer exists, and the current copyright holder (Infogrames) doesn't seem to acknowledge BotF, I'd say it's pretty much dead.

Not to mention the fact that the Star Trek franchise is now exclusively licensed.

that sucks he, BOTF was so much fun to play, especially because of the races acted like they do in the series, I mean you just can't bomb a planet when you're playing federation side, without your people nagging about it. I even found this game by searching for a substitute for BOTF. Cause it wasn't perfect : the AI of the smaller races ::: really bad. And after a few months I wanted more possibilities to microtune my star systems...
I really really hope that there will be a star trek mod :D

AFAIK, BOTF2 died in 2002 ... (man, we'll end up using only acronyms ! :D )

aww man.. died in 2002 eh?

I still play BOTF multiplayer with friends very often.. but its hard to get other people to play it since the one patch is nowhere to be found on the internet. So other friends can't join the multiplayer games since they need that patch....

The didn't think the minor races where that bad... only when you put them on highestsetting in the options screen. (There was like, None, Few, Some, Many or something).. we usully play with the setting to Few... that way when someone does find a minor race, its pretty important (unless its those damn lizard guys who are pacifists hehe) and there have been a lot of battles over minor races.

oh well... maybe one day...

Woas,
I was talking about the BOTF2 project.. I also have BOTF and still enjoy it from time to time.
The patch is very easy to find, just did it last week, make a Google search ! :)

One Star Trek mod that's doable now is photon torpedos for battleships. When attacking, you can choose to use phasers, torpedos or both. PT are finite and can only be renewed when a ship docks with a starbase or Star System.

I loved BOTF so much I wanted to program something like that myself, so I joined those guys who were trying to make botf2, but that was not my style, they said : de-assembly botf... I mean no-offense but I want to write a sequel, not fumble with code you can't read, and then struggle with it for two years for what... to adjust a few settings? no thanx. But I want to write a turn-based strategy starting this summer (it probably isn't going to be as good as this one but hey, we'll have at least some extra experience then ... ). By the way anyone interrested to help?

Woas:

Here's a link to the BOTF 1.02 patch, which I believe is the latest one. It's from the infogrames site:

Sorry, not sure how to code in links on this board, so you may have to copy and paste it. Hope this helps!
