RANT!

NOTE: THIS IS IN NO WAY DIRECTED AT ANYONE HERE. IT IS TO LET OFF SOME STEAM AFTER A "DEBATE" WITH MY MOTHER.

G'AH!!! WHY DOES SHE HAVE TO BE SO STUBBORN!

We began to talk about what america was found on, the basic principles. She insisted that america was founded as a christian nation, that those who don't accept that can go to hell. She said that those who willing don't speak english should be shipped back to their homeland. She said that our found fathers wanted this nation to be based on god.

I disagreed. I said that i felt that the nation, despite the fact that the founding fathers were religious (in their own way, primarily diesm, i believe) that they fought for the rights of whoever came to america, to believe in what they want. To speak their mind, hence the 1st amendment, etc... She wasn't even willing to accept my side. She said quote "we (the usa) are going down the path to our destruction - if we do not get it back to the principles it was founded on, we are doomed"

Again, I told her. That if we were intended to be *only* christian. Only have people who believe in God, then why isn't there anything in history that says "the founding fathers insisted...." (You fill in the rest)

Now, I do believe in a higher being, call it whatever you like. Thats the great thing about america, we can believe what ever we want...

Politically, that's very correct, but I'm certain your Mum's intent was not speaking of policy, but rather, culturally and religiously.

She said that our found fathers wanted this nation to be based on god. ElindelWolf

I believe the founding fathers were extemely intelligent and thoughtful men, however, they probably never thought the freedom "of religion" would mean freedom "from religion" or that it even be something far removed from Christendom. Pagans, Buddhists, Athiests, and even Muslims are probably good exotic examples of how far reaching the first amendment application provides for under it's mantle.

I believe the amendment was simply written to provide against a state established religion (or even denomination) - to provide freedom to Americans.

Today, we cannot look back at the somewhat unfounded context the founders may have drawn upon in writing the first amendment. We can, however, realize the founding fathers were following a great hint - that for Americans to be free, unrestricted personal belief was wholly reconciled with any contemporary and long standing democracy.

America is able to operate because of the dis-regulation of personal belief, because of it's absence of dictatic ruling. Those that ascribe to religious beliefs not profitable to the further continuation of America eventually become marginalized to the point of near non-existence - a self cleaning oven - if you will, if they are not propped up in some way by powerful, corrupt, and below-surface groups with their own agenda to pursue.
