A Hairy Situation

To cut or not to cut…..I have no clue. I told you guys I recently took my braids out right?....no, wait a minute, that was mentioned in a response to Alison’s blog about her hair Link. Well to some people this might have seem trivial and in fact, one smart alecky person kind of told her that…and I really wanted to respond to him/her (I have no clue since he/she was a coward and signed in anonymously) but I thought not to because she might do a better job of it – in fact, I have to revisit it to see if she did…because so what if she wants to write about her hair...it's her blog... she can write whatever the heck she wants!

Anyway, I was saying that to some people, talking about your hair might seem too trivial a thing to think about, but to others it’s the “be all and end all” of the moment. My hair as always been one of the things I love about myself. Because of my “mixture” in the gene pool, I have what my friends in my childhood (and even now) used to call…good hair, the slightly kinky, soft kind that happens to be shoulder length and a lot of it too (read this as poufy). Don’t ask, some of you might have read or heard before the ridiculous “bad hair” and “good hair” issues in the black community. OK so it might not be so ridiculous because believe me, our love/hate affair with our hair is no joke and can be taxing, but I digress!

I recently looked at tons of photographs of me and gosh, that’s when I actually take note of the many things I’ve done to my hair. I have always loved the fact that I could do any and everything to it without fear, cut, color, braid, up do, twists, weaved, you name it I’ve done it. I’ve also from time to time in the past worn a wig depending on my mood and what adventure I was up to. Just chalk it up to my personality, plus I always knew how to have fun and lots of it – even after being married…with children.

Now that I’m older, (and still young at heart – and no 40 is not old!) I do still want to have my hair looking good and in a style that suits me. One of the reasons I braided my hair was to give it a rest from processing/relaxing, hot combing or flat ironing and any other of the gazillion things we women do to keep ourselves looking marvelous. Plus my hair was breaking a lot, so by braiding it, I didn’t have to do any of those things and getting ready to go was a cinch because I didn’t need to comb my hair. I still shampooed it and brush and moisturized to keep it flat but that was all.

So now that my hair is in its natural state again, I’ve been pretty miserable. I have no idea what to do. Do I cut it short, really short, curl it (and I love curls), braid it again….what do I do with it?! I keep changing my mind and that is the problem. I love the fact that it’s grown out a lot since I braid it so now it’s all even again. And I’ve already colored it myself a reddish-brown. Believe me, I’m pretty experience at it, plus it was much cheaper than going to the salon.

A salon, there in lays my problem. So far since living here, I don’t really have one. I take my son to the barber, different ones. Or he and his dad would just go to any branch of Super Cuts or Hair Cuttery near by, and there are several of them around us. As for me and my daughter (the older one) we have yet to find a salon that knows how to take care of our hair. I don’t know if it’s fear of the unknown or just being intimidated, but these hair stylists around us don’t do a good job of it. I actually found a lady in one of the Super Cuts that did a great job of cutting and styling my daughter’s hair some time ago, but she’s gone now. Hair is hair but the stylist has to know how to do it.

I still haven’t made up my mind yet of whether I’m going to have it cut really short or in layers. I like the idea of layers better, for now anyway. I also want something that will fit into my schedule of working out and being active. I’m usually drenched at the end of a workout so having hair that can meet this demand is important!

I do know one thing I don’t want to do, that’s pay out a lot of money to get a good hair cut! A good hair cut can cost a lot. But since I’m not a celebrity who can afford that kind of cash nor am I going to go to one of those high end spa salons, I hopefully don’t have to worry about that!

I had layers put in my hair a month or two ago after growing it out for about two years (No haircuts! I was scared of going into any of the places here!) and I love it.

I think your decision depends most on what you're feeling like. If you're tired of dealing with long, high-maintenance hair, then get a cute, easy short cut.

But if you want to keep your length, I think layers is a great idea. It makes hair look so much healthier and frames your face.

Of course, I'm a fan of curls, too.

Hair today, gone tomrorrow!
Gosh I wish my hair still had it's natural waveyness! Now, even though long and silky, it's too fine.
Doesn't hold a curl, so really I "should" get it cut short, I just love long hair tho.....
Braids don't stay braided, ponytails slide out, and a permanet is'nt too permanent, it's better than
curlers though!
No help from me either I guess.....
Can you wear it up so you wouldn't have to cut it? Maybe then you could stand it til you wear it down again???
I just always hate myself when I cut mine....sorry.

I totally understand Trudy! I've had those moments too. I'm currently wearing it up. Much better in the state it's in. Cutting hair is always a major thing for any woman!
