Two weeks.

My D will get to come home for 2 weeks emergency leave when I have surgery. I'll have to initiate a Red Cross message, but his command where he's at have said that he can come home.

The surgeon's office called this afternoon. There was a problem with one of the tests I'm supposed to have, but we worked things out. I got the opportunity to ask them when the operation was likely to happen.

They said the end of this month. That's 3 weeks away.

Now I'm a little nervous. It's one thing to talk about something that's just a concept...but this has all of a sudden gone from a concept to a reality.

I have to start thinking about flights to get D home. The military will pay for him to fly from where he's at to to the US east coast, but we're responsible for paying for his tickets there on out.

I had heard that some compaines are offering drastically discounted (and sometimes free) flights for military personnel on emergency leave. Can anyone reading this provide me with more information about that? That would be a huge help.....

I'm going to go find somehting to clean...try and funnel this nervous energy into a more constructive action.

dharma: Try American Airlines. I know they offer discounts to service members and dependents (I've used their discounted flights before), and they might be willing to work something out for you considering the circumstances.

And there's always MAC flights, although with the timeframe you're looking at, I don't know if that would even be a possibility.

Surgery can be many things. I hope yours is minor. Mine was. Yet I hope D will be with you.

I have also heard American Airlines is one of the ones doing that. Worth checking in to them.

I know you'll be happy to see him even under these circumstances. I wouldn't worry too much about the surgery itself. It's pretty routine these days, and since you didn't let it go as long as I made the mistake of doing, you should get very good results.

dharma: Try American Airlines.

We used them befire when he came home on mid-tour leave from Greenland. I checked into their flights, and they're asking for $235 before discounts and taxes. I also look at Southwest...I don't know if they give mil. disc.or not, but the most expensive flight they have is $170, and that's refundable. Space A isn't going to be an option this time, we don't have days to waste waiting for him to get a seat.

Hell yeah it does. That's a huge, huge deal to me. Knowing that he'll be there to hold my hand, to help me in and out of the shower when I get home...that's so meaningful and reassuring.

The surgeon is very optomisitc about the results, and if he's confident, so am I! I'm just not looking forward to the recovery period is all....but if D's home that will help a lot.

I don't have different info from those above...I just hope your husband is able to come home soon...and that you have that peace of mind of him being with you during your surgery.

I think his presence will be as helpful as any anaesthetic or painkiller they give you...

Thank you....I think that your assesment is totally correct. Knowing the he's here, that my kids are going to be taken care of, that I'll have someone to be with me during the initial recovery period...that's all a huge relief.

The first part is the surgical removal of the disc between L4 and L5 in my lower back. The second part involves using titanium plates and screws to stabilize L4 and L5 and placing donor bone tissue where the disc used to be to that the 2 vertebrae grow into one. I'm not sure if they'll do it anterior or posterior yet, but either method will involve a 6" incision (either on my belly or my back) and necessitate having to wear a brace that goes from my boobs to my hips for 3 months afterwards.

Believe it or not, I'm actually looking forward to it! Yes, it's going to hurt, but....it will be for a finite time. The pain I'm experiencing now will never go away unless it's treated surgically.
