"Wedgie"

added to dictionary

Everyone knows what a Wedgie is right? If you don’t, I guess you haven’t been in a school locker room, on a play field or even watch television much. The art of giving someone a “wedgie” is one of the most popular pranks amongst youngsters on most television shows that feature them in high schools to colleges.

The Akron Beacon Journal, stated that the word Wedgie has now been added to the Webster’s New World College Dictionary. I checked the Merriam Webster Dictionary; it has the word Wedged, and does describe it as the act of clothing being caught between the buttocks. But it does not, I repeat, does not have the word Wedgie!

I guess it takes a college dictionary to put the word in as it is popularly known. After all, a wedgie is the nightmare of any teen, they do it to each other for the "fun" of it!

This is how the word is listed: “wedgie: noun. A prank in which the victim’s undershorts are jerked upward so as to become wedged between the buttocks.”

Quite unpleasant from what I've seen too. I've never been given a wedgie by anyone, but I've had the uh, unpleasant experience of undergarment gone "bad" and having to get rid of the offending pant. OK, that's way too much information!

Now would you have thought this word was in the dictionary already? Truthfully, it's not something I would normally sit and think about. But it was interesting to read about.

Do wedgies happen that much outside of television shows anymore? I don't remember having it even mentioned in all of my years of school. I think they got thought up by writers trying to think of a good prank that teenagers could play. In my day, which was all of 2 years ago, unless college counts, in which case it's still my day, we enjoy the good old "circle game."

BTW, does that dictionary entry have an elaborated definition of the atomic wedgie?

I agree that it most definately was developed by television writers! atomic wedgie? I confess I'm not sure what you're referring to but I dont' think so!

The atomic wedgie...the purpose of this is to get the waistband of the offending undergarment pulled over the victims head.

In my high school days (the late 70's) the wedgie was a popular activity. It was often committed while yelling out the word 'Wedgie' numerous times, just in case the 'Wedgiee' didn't know what was happening. Ah yes, those were the days...

Hahaha, i didnt even know about that prank (i'm an island girl remember? ) But it sounds pretty funny...(as long as i'm not the wedgie, ahem thongs and strings *cough* are enough!)

The wedgie is an all time classic. I have ripped undies in the act of administering a wedgie. Timeless. 'Bout time this got the recognition it deserves.

Join the club IG, being from an island that is. But I knew about a wedgie even then, from television shows, then the kids tried to do it to each other! Thongs and strings, cough, cough...yeah...

I meant we're showing our age. Or at least let me rephrase that, since some people are twenty-something! I meant saying that we were in high schools in the 70's or 80's we are showing our age!

Do you get what I'm talking about? Sometimes my writing and what I'm trying to say collide into a mad rumble! Especially today, my allergies are up, it's raining cats and dogs outside and I had a slow start to the day!
