I just finished the main story last night.
Lets see, where to start.
I really really liked everything, I give the game an A-. I will go over my complaints first, because it is easier to do.
-First, is the time limit on the Scryve movement. I feel I was just getting to know my sector before they started taking over and getting close to Earth. I like to explore, so a little more leeway would have been nice. (I don't know how long it would have took though, it felt urgent.) I think I only got one or two sub-quest done not dealing with any of the main races.
-The Scryve themselves. I just found them boring compared to every other race in the game. Out of all the races, the Scryve themselves are pretty forgettable.
-"The Federation Trial" quest got me all messed up. I completed the total evidence collection parts of the quest, but never went back to the Tywom. I kept going to the Mu'Kay and could not activate the dialogue to complete the quest. I had no clue the trigger was talking again to the Tywon. Just more of an annoyance.
-Zooming out in a solar system right after leaving a planet always made me orbit the planet again. Another annoyance.
-Another minor annoyance was that I could not re-man "found" star ships.
-Sometimes things were a little too straight forward.
-I had a few glitches on the view screen when talking to aliens a handful of times. (Rarely, but it happened.) Sometimes the view screen would just be black, other times the alien themselves would be there, but the background would be black. It happened like 3-4 times during the whole play through. So it was no big deal, but it did happen.
The good:
-I loved the alien races. They were creepy, funny and all around fun. I hope Star Dock continues their dialogue trees with DLC and such. I want to dig deeper into what they are. (Well some of them. Others I will let be.)
-I really enjoyed the Overmind quest. It was my favorite main quest in the game. If I would have let it go, would it have ended the game?
-Mu'Kay ships kinda suck in melee mode, but my god they rock in story mode. They ended up being the back bone of my fleet. (I stupidly sold the ink blot device thinking I would never use it near the beginning of the game.)
-I am really glad it is "open-ended." I am going back to explore some of the sub-quest I know I left open because of the Scryve Threat.
-I love all the artifacts and ruins in the game, even if some turned out to be fairly useless, it made it feel like a lived in universe.
Final Thoughts:
-Definitely a worthy successor to the Star Control name.
-I hope Star Dock continues to support this game and expand on the Spur as months and years to come. If nothing else make player made content official. Also add some sort of generator to renew resources on planets (If it is not already in there.) etc ... etc ... Oh, and add all those left out creatures to add to the diversity of life on a planet!!! At least triple the creature count (I counted roughly 6 main types, 18-24 would be awesome) !!
-The main plot and twist were fun, not ground breaking, but fun.
-Again, I look forward to all the expansions Star Dock will through my way.
-Afterwork I plan on hitting the subquests I missed.
-Also I should have let the Xandi (sp?) beat up on the Scryve a bit longer. Whatcha going to do though? (I should not have sold the ink blot device or the Tywom hyperdrive for a quick buck.) I may have to play through again.
