Easier way to upgrade all my designs?

So you develop a new tech, say Pulse Cannons.
Of course, all your ships and designs are now out of date, I need to upgrade all my designs to incorporate the great new weaponry.

So I have to manually go through each one, "Use Design", remove all the guns, add the new guns and save it.
Then find the old one in the list and make it obsolete.
Then I have to do that for every design - I only have up to medium hulls right now, no defense available and only cannons - so this is as easy as it gets.
But I still have 4 main designs with 3 variations (more range, more speed, more firepower) - 12 designs in total - that's a good 15 mins at least to do. Every time I invent new ship tech.

I'm just wondering what other people do to make this process easier?
Or am I completely missing something?

I have just cut it down to 4 designs to make things easier. Not ideal but I guess that's the only way?
I can see this is a tough one to solve since we have such flexibility.

This is an improvement that we really need. Good thing I rarely build ships before endgame.

I thought you can save it as a template and that made it auto-upgrade?

I've never actually tried, since I just changed the blueprint defs to ships I would like to use. Might be a bit daunting if you don't know what you're doing, though (and the AI will use them).

The AI uses my designs? I thought i saw that happening! lol

The answer is that i usually do not bother upgrading except the ship which i am currently building, and there is usually only one type of powerful ship i build - which is a high defensive escort. I then fill the logistics with rubbish ships i traded from minor races.

If and when i have to take a fleet into battle, and it looks difficult,,, only then i will update ... and the only important change i make to the crappy ships i got from the AI is to make them 'capital'.

One defensively powerful Escort combined with whatever crap you like that are capitals is a pretty invincible fleet,, your jaw will drop when you see what it can do! lol

If i want a super powerful fleet,,, i will design one tech ship, combined with offensive tiny ships set to capital, and one defensively powerful escort with the largest hull i have, tailored to the primary weapons of the enemy. All set up with my latest weaponry,,, but mostly i don't need to bother doing this.
