I just won my first game on normal difficulty, so I decided to try bumping the galaxy-wide AI up one step to gifted and try as a new race.
Everything falls to crap almost immediately.
I'm trying an Altarian game, beginning with a heavy focus on research and expansion. When I run into any AI faction, usually around turn fifty, they have more worlds than I do, more techs than I do, a significant war fleet, and they instantly hate me because I don't have a navy. They send in waves of constructors to claim the choicest strategic resources near me (prioritizing precursor relics I never even found in the fog of war), and then get mad that I had the gall to found worlds in their sphere of influence. They declare war not long after that and begin picking off my worlds.
Investing 100% of my efforts into infrastructure and empire building I find myself utterly overwhelmed my enemies that antagonize me instantly, have better economies/research/influence, and a fleet of warships before I have any weapons technologies.
How do you fight gifted AI? I am honestly baffled how people take these on and win.
On a related note, is there a mode or mod that gives the AI more teeth than normal, but doesn't let them cheat on such a blatant level? This is getting frustrating.
