I'm not seeing any benefit from mining ascension crystals or asteroids. What do ascension crystals do if not playing with the ascension victory option? Also, are the asteroids supposed to boost production as in Galciv2?
Acension crystals have no effect other than contributing towards an ascension victory.
Asteroids have no effect other than to host durantium deposits. I also use them as visual landmarks.
Ascension crystals (and all other precursor artifacts) do have an effect on research if you have the appropriate racial trait.
Ascension crystals are awesome if you have the ancient trait. I have 3 in my current game and it let's my non research world's each add about 100 -200 ish RP. Which isn't bad when you have 50 world's!
