I'm sorry if this isn't germane to the discussion, but crimsonsun_2000 mentioned the length of the game and its pacing and its possible impact on strategy. Here, I think, is where choice of map size comes in--and the type of map you choose to play on, as well as the number of opponents, will very much impact on your gameplay and strategy. Colony rushing and war tech rushing becomes much more important with tiny or small maps than with the humongous map sizes. Map size I think also would figure very strongly with ideology choices too. I'd be much more likely to go with malevolent on a tiny or small map because you want those military improvements for the wars that will soon take place. While with a larger map size, pragmatic and benevolent become more viable choices.
Also, I have a problem with the ship designer too. I guess the best way to get better is to practice building ships!
Of course, that's also the most fun way!
As for the AI, right now, it is weak, but if I know Frogboy and Co., it won't take long until it's as challenging and deadly as the AI in GCiv2, and believe me, even the lower level AI will give you a decent game.
Have fun!
