The only reason people use brick and mortar stores is because they have to. Brick and mortar stores have (had) publishers by the balls and they know it and abuse it, so don't be surprised to see publishers and developers drop brick and mortar stores as soon as it's financially viable. Brick and mortar stores still hold a large percentage of sales for consoles. (and that is before even considering that in a digital sale you get 70% of the transaction, while in a physical transaction your lucky to get 30%)
I read something about EA on steam but i think it was just someone using a random example for something, but maybe it escalated from that.
