Is there a way to change the default map rotation?

I see absolutely no advantages to the horrible default diagonal rotation but turning it to an orthogonal grid every time (every load and every battle) gets tedious very fast (especially since it only responds to my middle mouse button about 1 time in 10!   -a fix for that would be welcome too).

This absolutely dwarfs the times I rotate because I want a better view. I've been reminded that Ctrl+Cursors rotates reliably which is on small step in the right direction

I can't see anything in prefs.ini but maybe there's a setting that could be added if only I knew what to write?

Perhaps there's a mod or it's in some other editable file and someone could point me to it? (I can't be the only one to hate these diagonals)
