That would be a great use of fame, to pay for unusually powerful summons etc. more options for high level creatures is good.

I don't like to keep fame as a commodity and I'm stretching my imagination when it comes to spending it on Henchmen. I attribute that you're fame is lessened by the advent of a new upcoming hero. I look at fame as a good indicator of RPG score (similar to XP, but that is an individual's RPG score really). The higher your fame the higher your RPG score and to maximize your RPG score is another gameplay aspect that I rather enjoy. In the quest editor, I would like it if people would tell me what they need to have different in the editor to see newly created quests. I would like to see more fame based quests, where your fame reaches a certain point and BAM people come nagging you to do something for them.  I only have so much time to create quests, and it always seems I want to create new buildings and units for each and every quest I make... I've got to stick with what artwork is there at some point.

Parrot you raise an intriguing point, perhaps even suggested an alternative to the tech system

you start off with basic tech option available to you. Your fame rises as the game progresses. then fame unlocks a quest, which upon completion unlocks more tech tree options. You can have some choices whether you want tech branch a or tech branch b unlocked, you only get one over the course of the game - perhaps an opportunity later to pick up quests to get missing tech options.

Perhaps even some kind of 'master' quest; something that each sovereign has (and custom sovereigns could pick from). Several quest-stories could be written up and the resulting decisions you make upon reaching higher and higher levels of fame will guide you're journey through the realm of Elemental. In the end, does the journey lead you to the Pit ? Does it lead you to the Dragon's Eye? Does it lead you to the Spell of Making?

RPG in sandbox FTW! It would be the first 5x game ever! (explore, expand, exploit, exterminate, and experiance!)

EDIT: are there any neutral kingdoms in the lore you haven't revealed yet froggy ?

edit# 2: by kingdoms, I mean civilizations, organized groups that use neither life  nor death magic but something else instead.
