It sounds like the problem is with your girlfriend. 
All trolling aside, have you tried enabling the windowed mode? I use this mode and go to chat by tapping the start button, which brings up the task bar. I am sure a real windowed mode and other features are being worked on, but for the beta that might have to be your solution.
