So the most important thing to me in games is immersion. I want to be tranported from my life into a place that is interesting to be in and now while elemental is getting better as a game its not getting better at an escape which to me is really an essential part of any form of RPG.
The map has gotten soo so much better from EWOM, the introduction of true random maps and rivers (which could look alot better) is excellent. One of the key components I think missing though is created named areas, and more varied terrain.
We need
marsh / swamp
desert
beaches where the terrain meets the sea and looks to make sense.
jungle
tundra
ice
and especially what we need is a terrain algortihm that places these things logically and gives them creative names on the cloth map, forest of shadows, swamp of remorse, etc. And then, and most importantly, logically put quests, goodies, monsters/dungeons/pyramids/ruins/temples/etc (maybe even some grass variation, add plains and having something like "the neverending plain") in those areas that make sense for the terrain and possibly tell the story of the area.
The best seperator for cities as well in a fanatasy world would be these areas. The map absolutly and definetly does not need to look like a full blow civ map wth even spaced cities and an entire map covered in cultural borders. I would almost map it out so that geographically inhospitable areas don't count toward city spacing, and then with all the filler from the geographical areas lower the distance between cities from 8 to maybe 6. Also add more choke points and an algortihm that creates promotes more natural looking cities an easy thing would be to add a bonus for river (which more are needed) and fresh water proximity.
I get all the stuff being done for the game itself but the elements to make me buy into the world are still severly lacking and don't appear to be on your radar.
