Not to mention that boxes cost to design, manufacture and deliver. Some time ago, there was a huge argument where one consumer made a stink with Stardock that they were "Promised" a box set on an expansion that was download only. It went back and forth and the user provided a link to a picture and stated that he/she had a place on his/her shelf all ready for the box. I think it was Frogboy who came back at the consumer, very nicely I might add, stating that the box never physically existed and that the expansion was only ever supposed to be download only. And that he was very sorry that the consumer was disapointed, but that no physical box existed for Stardock to send. He stood firm and I commend him for doing it.
As far as entitlement, yes, Demanding a box and physical copy of FE is totally out of line. The fact that Stardock is going the (extreme) extra mile to provide copies for free (in whatever form) is HUGE. And very much appreciated.
I have played games that were significantly worse out of the box where the manufacturer said "Oh well. We got your money so tough". One game i purchased had a reputation for eating hard drives yet the game manufacturer did nothing. And is still in business today. Another company released a game that would not boot from the disk on 100% of the released copies and required several (day 1) patches just to get running. The state of running was horrible as well, but that didn't bother them. Nothing was offered in compensation. And if you have ever played the "Updated" Pool of radiance, nuff said. I consider Elemental at launch to be WORLDS better. and the fact that it has been brought up to playability even more so.
The excellent folks at StarDock have gone a LONG way to make good on the game as is. If that isn't enough for any consumer then they must live very disapointed lives because just offering the downloadable is about 3 steps beyond anything I see as reasonable. But it doesn't surprise me with this company.
