escaping units possible bug

Playing my first game of 1.1 I found that in both of the fights where my sovereign was present and I wanted to run I could only move my sovereign off of the tactical board. For all of the other units there was no option to move on to the escape squares.

Is this as intended (if so why?) or is it a bug?

I think the problem you're speaking about is the "click" bug, where the tile where you click is not the one the game think you clicked... I suggest you try to move the camera around and try a number of times, and try to click around the escape square before to give up.
This problem evolved over the versions and the tactical battles are the place from where the problem appear the least, and the escape is the main click problem in this mode.

It appears a lot in the main view, especially if you click over mountains. There also is a problem when clicking cities. Be it to select it or to order another unit to go there, to attack or cast a spell, you often have to click a number of times before it works...

I played again today I had a battle where a hero could escape but not the pioneer with her. Can pioneers not leave a tactical board for some reason?

No, it's not because they were pioneers. I have this problem in almost every TB where my army retreats, and it's with all types of unit. Have not tried moving the camera though, will give this a go..

I just had a pioneer and one escort get jumped by 4-5 very fast spiders. I could not get them to escape, no matter what i did. i faught one round, and then, to hasten the inevitable, hit the auto-battle button. Wow, the pioneer and a measly swdman killed all the spiders. Funny, because in the battle, before I hit auto, the swdman was getting hacked pretty bad - looked like a gonner.

Is auto messed up, as well?

I believe only heroes and sovereigns can retreat.
