Without useing the current Tech Trees, is the World of Elemental an interesting place to play in and explore?
Well, not really since what is there to do? Wait around "reading" the current issue EWoMs' Centerfold Sovereigns waiting for that incoming horde of spiders&bears... ?
Should it be?
Yes; it should be. Currently while I love the idea behind EWoM; I'm finding myself feeling that it's lost that touch of magik that I was introduced to in 1.09e. It does not have the numerous elements needed to keep a game interesting & involing. All these points have been stated in numerous threads by other people with numerous suggestions for changes that would expand EWoM and make it more immersive. But regretably, atm, it has none of those needed elements.
Also, now that I've been reduced to a sword weilding freak of nature, I find myself missing 1 thing very much. What happened to blood? I mean, I'm hacking & slashing these bozos down like mad & there isnt a single drop of blood or gore. Now I understand all that "concerned parents groups BS" but it sure would be nice to ahve a button that lets me select blood & gore since I've been an adult supposedly for longer than I can remember.
Example of what is missing:
I've said this a few times before in the Next galCiv game thread and others... but I'll repeat it again since its a really good example for a game that involved you in many aspect to keep it exciting and interesting. There is a very old game back form 1986 ( i thnk thats the year...) called Emperor of the Fading Suns that was based on a roleplaying game of the same name by Holistic.. It had so many diferent ellements to it that many people who played it back in the day still play it today even though its a nightmare to run on current high end machines. It was massive, with space battles, ground battles on worlds that you could travel around... yes if you traveled the world from end to end you would end up back at your starting point; and these worlds had there own independant factions or barbarians you could declare war on to gain control of the planet; even sometimes finding they had a Royal Sceptor for you to claim as your own.(used to count votes for Emperor or Regent). Diplomacy, including a vote every few years to decide who would be crowned Emperor (game winning vote), or failing that Regent, there were 3 special branches of government that the Regent could asign to 3 diferent AI, or player factions, for voting in there favor. If you got tired of allways losing the vote, and had the armies to do it, you could declare war on the neutral armies gaurding the Throne world and simply take the world by force. Massive npc factions, The Symbiots, and alien/human nightmarish enemy attempting to invade the known worlds & barely being held back. The Church of Holy Terra that would excominicate & invade AI & player planets if they researched illeagal techs. The Trade Guild, a massive gallaxy spanning merchant fleet with outpost on nearly all the known worlds and had agenda of its own. All these factions had planets that you could invade; if you so chose to. There was a massive tech tree with numerous units for both space & ground & magik. yes magik, seems those Symbiots had a weakness versus magik which when discovered turned the tide of the war so the known worlds could breath a sigh of relief since the last major incursion was beaten back 100's of years ago.And it was multiplayer with a play by mail turn system that made a such an old game a favorite with so many people.
I realize it not the same genre, but what I was trying to do is illustrate that all the "hooks" that keep people playing games for so long are not really in EWoM.
and the reason I use EotFS as an example is because I've wished that game would be remade for todays graphics machines... GalCiv II hooked me with it's bells & whistles; but if it had what EotFS had, I would have sold my soul to stardock. (or something like that)
