What does the long range jump tech actually do?

So the long range jump tech says that I can make jumps into distant star systems. Sounds good.

So I'm playing on a multi star map...and there are already wormholes that let me leap to other star systems. The long range jump tech doesn't seem to add anything different. So what does it do?

Once you researched the above mentioned tech, you can jump from star to star since worm holes will not connect every star on your map....Bison...

so on maps with no wormholes...... maps with more than one sun.

You go to the sun on the middle and jump to another systems sun...... a lot of larger maps have many suns.

wormholes DO NOT usually end you up in another sytem, wormholes are usually intrasystem. So long range jumps is usally the only option to get to another system.

Larger maps tend to have some inter-system wormholes. Ancient Gifts is one case where the only way to move from one system to another is through wormholes.
