Shelving the game for a while and coming back later is definitely not a bad idea. I did it back in August after the release, which was sour after having been in the Beta since like April.
I came back at the end of September and was pleasantly surprised to see how far the game had come, at least in stability.
They're fixing one major issue at a time, and that's a good thing. It shows that they know there are major issues with their game, and by fixing them, they're pseudo-admitting to the broken state the game is currently in. By fixing them, we're also getting a better game out of it, as well as the chance to be some small part of the design process. It's cool.
You don't need to be godly patient or tolerant for Elemental, or even Stardock. The only thing you need to be is hopeful. Keep a glimmer, so that in a few months when it piques your brain again, you download the latest version and see where it's at... And be pleasantly surprised. ^^
