I installed the game last night and updated it right away to 1.07. So I really have no personal knowledge of the state of the game beyond this. Right away I couldn't but compare certain aspects with Civilization 4. Specifically in being given feedback on when my turn is over. If I leave a unit idle it would be nice to be prompted that the unit is actually there. It can be easy to forget about it.
I did run into an issue trying to play the campaign such as it was. I had a headache at the time I tried to play so won't really judge that part until later but it wasn't coming off to well at the time. Just in terms of content without even factoring in the somewhat bad voice acting. The issue I had in addition to no feedback of when my turn was over was that I couldn't even end a turn once I meet the one Queen. I kept clicking and clicking the button but nothing. I've read some people saying the story mode is a tutorial and I have to disagree with that. i got more out of the thin manual. I think I'm not going to actually not even bother with this aspect of the game to be honest. Like Civ I seem to learn more by reading the entries and just figuring things out as I go along. How detailed or accurate that is remains to be seen.
I also when that problem started character portraits started showing the wrong pictures. The game didn't crash or anything. However restarting it didn't help so I figured the entire save file was bugged.
So I tired of that and then loaded up a non-campaign game. I created my character but didn't realize a weapon skill take a nice chuck of the skill points you can give out. On this front it plays very similar to Civilization (the one I played the most was 4 so I can't help but compare it to that) but with more of a focus on city building which I happen to really like. Especially since you can see the city build up and decide where things go. Having an actual character was a nice touch. Glad you can have battle auto-resolve. I don't think I could stomach having to play each battle manually due to how slow paced things are. However doing that though simply allows it to become a numbers game I think. The more people grouped the more likely they are to win the battle. My character hasn't one fired off a magic spell doing battles this way. Perhaps I have to fight manually to take advantage of that. If that's the case then there is no point in learning magic if you are going to primarily have battles auto-resolve themselves.
I haven't looked further to see if there is a scenario's option. Wondering how I can build docks as well if that's possible. So far it's interesting. I like that I can zoom out and zoom in far enough to actually see people working in my village. Not a city to any degree from what I can tell. Will be messing around with it some more tonight. Chances are I'll end up treating it like Civ4 in that I'll play a game for a few hours or a few days and maybe not touch it for weeks or months at a time until the desire to build appears again.
I didn't seem to have any issues in the non-campaign option however .... so far. The campaign problems were a turn off. The graphics take some getting used to as at times they are nice and at others somewhat ugly. Not sure if innovative is the word I'd use to describe what is being done in the game. Seems similar to many games of the same style that came before it. There haven't been many fantasy games of this time from what I can tell so it stands out in regard. I like what I could play but it won't be something I play above all other games though. At least not at the moment. At the moment I'm not regretting the purchase but it's not knocking my socks off or anything. More feedback to the player from the game would be nice as I said.
Edit:
Well played some more and I was wrong about the magic. It is used during auto attacks. Nice.
