Yeah, someone used a spell on me too. I was shocked. I think instead of using end turn all of the time to make the units come to me to wack them i'll only use that method some of the time now!

Same here, one of my very first games an enemy Sovereign killed my Sovereign with ONE spell. 

So, as far as I can tell, they've always cast spells. 

Hmmm, now that I think on it.. maybe it was one of the golems that cast that weird rocks falling from the sky thing.

Guess why as soon as I have 5 mp to spare I cast "Protect Friend" my Sovereign and important heroes , it happened in my first game too...

does that work? i think i casted that spell on both hero and sov.. and tried to engage the vigilant spy thingy that does the arcane doom.

still died. or is that not a spell? (then again. that was in 1.05 i think)
