After playing for a week or so, I came up with some feedback and ideas. I haven't had time to browse the forums all that much, so I apologize if these issues have been brought up before - I just wanted to put down some thoughts, hopefully to improve the game in future versions or mods.
First off, I agree that the game seems unfinished (or like a really polished beta) rather than a complete product. Personally, I'm okay with that - I'd rather play it now and let it get finished later instead of having to wait another couple months. If I really hated it, I'd just wait a bit and see how the updates were. I just hope reviewers take this fact into account, however. Anyway, here are my thoughts:
--Right now, I'm having the most fun playing around with the Dynasties. I don't even know why it's so fun, because it doesn't have much of an effect on the game, but there's something just cool about it.
----There's really no reason for me to give up my daughters, however. I usually have enough sons to just snatch up the other faction's female children.
----A few ideas for dynasties having a an effect: Include a dynasty option in trade/treaties. Thus you could "sell" your daughter to another faction, or use a daughter to appease a faction destroying you in war and sign a treaty.
----Why doesn't anyone care if you kill their spouse/kids? (I could've sworn killing spouses used to have a negative effect, but it seems to have disappeared). Additionally, if you wanted dynasties to be -really- cool, you could have other factions get pissed when you kill kids who had been married off. E.g. if a Tarth daughter marries a Relias son, I declare war on Relias and kill the former Tarth daughter, Tarth should get pissed too. Lots of potential here.
----Also, the pacing for marriage is way off for the computer. Unless I marry the first female hero I come across (and sometimes not even then), the computer usually has 3-4 kids grown by the time I have one.
----Why can't I see other sov's dynasties in the family tree screen? Additionally, it might help to have the original faction color of the offspring surrounding their portrait instead of the gray that's there now.
----Also, perhaps as an optional feature, I think it would be cool to have factions city-based instead of sovereign-based. As it stands right now, it's too easy to find opposing sov - take over city nearby with stack of death - crush sov next turn, immediately ending their faction. This would also open the possibility of eventually "inheriting" your opponent's cities through proper marriage arranging.
--My computer really doesn't like the zoomed-in view or the tactical battles, and no amount of driver updates or dumbing down the graphics seems to help. I'm okay with just the cloth map, really, but right now it looks booooring. Could we put a little bit of color in it, maybe just green grass under kingdom cities and the marbled black/gray under fallen cities?
--Heroes are boooring, and really aren't worth the effort.
----I think it would help make them more distinct if they had "drawn" portraits on their cards (like the minor races' spouses/nobleman's daughter) rather than the rendered character. Can we mod this somehow? Haven't dug into it too much yet.
----I'm sure it's been discussed, but right now heroes are just too fragile to level up. Especially considering the fact that I can't remarry once a spouse is dead, I end up just dumping them someplace safe, far away from everything.
--Why can't I fight against custom sovs or pick which sovergn I want to lead opposing factions? Why can't I edit the sovs I made (I'm sure I can somehow, but haven't figured it out yet, and it shouldn't be something I need to figure out)? Why do custom races seem to get more points than most of the pre-made races?
--The overworld monsters are a bit much right now. They're just a flood, and I don't think they add much to the game in their current state. One or two deadly stacks every now and then (perhaps generated by an active quest?) would be more effective. Maybe turning quests off will erase them, but if so the link isn't obvious.
--"Epic" technology pace is apparently slow, and not fast. This fact is more confusing due to the fact the technology speed loops back to the beginning after you go through it. Once again, I managed to figure it out on my own, but I shouldn't have needed to.
--The other faction's AI right now doesn't seem to attack empty cities. Regardless, it's still pretty easy to just send one stack of death into their terrority and completely wipe them out.
Just my thoughts - sorry about the length. Let me know what you guys think!
