It is worth it, they made sure to keep it up to date as far as critical balances and fixes, as for features like starbases and better diplomacy options expansion are a must but they are cheap as well about $10 each

Definitely worth playing on its own. Nothing wrong with the expansions, but the original game is fine stand-alone. If you're going multiplayer, you'll definitely want them, though.

Its really hard for me to play origional sins after the expansion packs... There are numerous AI improvements in the expansion, which makes regular sins seem like easy mode. you also generally need the expansions for the many mods. Id get everything, I saw a trinity on sale for 30$ at target the other day.

just, one thing with trinity, there are 2 files you have to delete, else if you hit up multiplayer youll get some wierd mesh files dont match error... and they are in a hidden folder.

I'm not convinced that the AI is smarter in the expansions because it has no idea how to deal with starbases properly. Thus, it's possible that the AI in original Sins is smartest (because it won't be stupid about starbases). However, the Diplomacy expansion adds two new, nastier AI difficulty levels (which are really just eco-buffs) with Cruel and Vicious AI.

They do seem to be more aggressive (in diplomacy), so it is much harder for players that like to turtle. Even if they starbase the AI will take most of the map and the player will either have a very long game ahead of them or possibly even lose against crushing numbers. In the original Sins the easy AI would take forever to expand.

The AI is alot better in Diplomacy, Alot. Yes though SB still kick their ass, but given time they will adapt. Its just a a pace far slower than what most play. A small blessing for us who play on the slowest settings
